GENERAL ASSESSMENT
Among the 20 portfolios I scanned, I can say that most of them that I viewed have a knack in Photography. It’s very interesting how they capture those images from assignment 1 specifically to already make use of the design elements and principles. One of the few that genuinely impressed me was Dan’s Street Photography which made use of a black and white format. I just find it cool that it appeared to be like a poster of some sort in some indie film save for a title placed on top. You can feel the ambience of the place evoked by the shadows in the image. Aside from that, his Neon-light portraits were also fascinating to look at. Another set of images I’ve liked is from Thursday’s submissions. I’m a fan of images that are subliminal, and the hallways and buildings which she took a photo of gave off such an impression to me. The symmetry present and a tall line that creates an illusion in your mind is what made me be in awe about it. To some, such pieces would seem a simple path, but for me it’s more than that since it was able to deliver an emotion of isolation. I really liked most of the submissions made by my peers and I don’t see any of them having a very hard time to incorporate the lessons provided in our course and I think some are already an amateur photographer too. Some may just need a little bit more improvement and I personally think I’d need that too since I’m not really someone that would always go out and take a snap of things and events I see on a day-to-day basis. I’m still looking forward to how far will we be able to reach before and after undergoing this class.
This image taken by Marie Claire is one of the 5 images that got my interest mainly because it was able to make use of some symmetry from the tree’s branches that expands further upward. The tree was also well emphasized due to its shadow, it’s kind of like how a black and white picture gets an enhanced emphasis on the texture. What I don’t really feel about the image is the lower right shed that felt off-putting in the image. Add to that the structure behind the tree which I think maybe it the image can be taken from a different angle removing it from the view could be better. Overall, this picture was good for me.
The next image here is taken by Sheena Saclauso. I think this image was able to make use of the golden spiral. The trees captured in it gives off an overlapping element which in turn provides us an insight about how tall the buildings behind are actually were. I also like how the image was giving off an emotion of peace and a time to rest simply because of the orange sunlight which may mean that it’s about late in the afternoon. I really liked this image and I’m very much satisfied with it as is.
This image was taken by Thursday Reyes. This one right here was one of the three most liked images I’ve seen among the ones I’ve checked out. This image shows a tall crop, symmetry from the doors and small compartments. A leading line, which is the pathway at the center, helps to guide the direction from how we will view the image. It also gives us a rough idea of how far this hallway could go. I don’t really have anything I want to change in this picture as I’ve already liked every bit of it. Great work for my course mate!
This image was taken by Thursday Reyes. This image is a great example for Diagonals. At first glance, the right building seems to be leaning to the center which in turn gave off an impression that it could possibly fall at any moment. Symmetry is also present from the building’s entire structure and from its windows.
This image was taken by Maria Graciella Catalan. The details on this flower picture were just very stunning. There are elements of design such as pattern, texture, and shape used in the picture. The droplets on the petals are one of the key details I noticed that gave off information about the flower’s size as such droplets are naturally small to look at. If there’s anything I would like to add from this picture was probably a frame within a frame. The color is very vibrant and fits so well with the subject at hand.
SELF-REFLECTION
After examining the outputs of my course mates from their portfolios, I can rate myself as someone at a 5-6/10. The way I capture images compared to them was far cruder than theirs. Take for example the way of using diagonals in a picture. I wasn’t aware of that not until it was discussed in this course and I saw some examples myself from their works. Another thing that I need to change is that, my perspective of a black and white image is less appealing than a colorful one. I have been very limiting towards the stuff that I take a picture of hence I can say that I am stuck in a very beginner status in terms of photography. I also consider of keeping in mind on using the Rules of Thirds or the Golden Spiral. I’ve been seeing it from my devices back then but I never really shed any notice of importance to them as I just thought it was just there just to align a position and nothing further than that. I think I really should go and learn more from the basics such as taking pictures of flowers and from that, expand my horizons on what I could take a picture of. I am still really yet to grasp the concepts but I’m currently doing my best in assimilating what was being discussed in the course manual into the images I try to capture now. What I really dream to achieve as a sign of my improvement is that I could be able to evoke a strong emotion solely from just one image alone without having the need to write down a narrative to explain what I mean about it. I admire most of the shots made by my peers in this course and I hope I could pull off the same level of expertise as them whether during or after this entire course.
