Hypoglycaemia is a common but a potentially serious complication that requires prompt and standardised care. Despite updates to the Joint British Diabetes Societies (JDBS) guidelines in 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2023 research has shown significant variation in management of Hypoglycaemia between patients. Traditional audits have been unable to address this variation, which necessitates immediate attention.
The Association of British Clinical Diabetiologists (ABCD) and DEKODE have initiated a collaborative project to respond to this issue. Furthering the success of previous quality improvement projects, this initiative aims to standardise the management of Hypoglycaemia by improving adherence to JDBS guidelines, in an effort to potentially reduce the frequency of severe Hypoglycaemia episodes.
Data Management
- All data will be collated and analysed by a data analyst sourced by ABCD and DEKODE.
Expected Outcomes
- Improved high-quality management of Hypoglycaemia, reducing the number of hypoglycaemia episodes evolving into severe hypoglycaemia.
- Consistent delivery of high-quality care, potential reduction in hospitalisation costs, better patient outcomes, increased staff knowledge, and sharing of best practices
AIM: To improve adherence to JBDS guidelines for Hypoglycaemia management using quality improvement methodology.
OBJECTIVES:
Increase the number of sites contributing to a centralised database
Provide regular feedback to stakeholders
How can you participate?
Contact us: Express your interest in joining the program by contacting the provided contacts from ABCD.
Gain Approvals: Obtain necessary approvals from your local clinical governance or ethics committee. The project team will provide support for this process.
Data Collection: Designate qualified healthcare professionals (medical students, junior doctors, or specialist nurses) to collect data on Hypoglycaemia cases and enter pseudonymised data into the secure form.
Feedback and Improvement: Benefit from regular feedback on your hospital's performance, gain insights into improvement areas, and learn from successful interventions other participating hospitals implement.
The ABCD DEKODE Collaborative Working Project offers an opportunity to improve Hypoglycaemia care across the UK. By participating, you'll contribute to a national effort to standardise treatment, reduce variations in care, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients with Hypoglycaemia.
