Journey of Life :
Debarati was born and brought up in the ‘City of Joy’ Kolkata which has a rich history of culture and heritage. This beautiful sprawling city of emotions, of sentiments, of thoughts, and of feelings has taught her different life lessons during growing up years. Later, after completion of her studies, she shifted to the ‘Garden City’ Bangalore to do industrial research. But, returning to the academy was always flowing like a stream in her inner consciousness. She believes, teaching is the best way of learning. So, after a short stint at Europe for Postdoc, she returned to India to join her alma-mater, IIT-Kharagpur where she is a Professor of Telecommunication Engineering at present. Apart from her engagement in teaching, research and student mentoring, she is entrusted with some administrative responsibilities also. On the personal front, she is married and mother of a lively girl Debomita who is always bubbling with newer ideas and keeps her mom busy. They always love to enjoy quality time with each other. Besides this, Debarati loves singing, listening to music, watching movies, cooking occasionally, and travelling. Her favorite travel destination in India is Kerela, it is truly God's own country! And favorite International destination is France. She is yet to visit one of her dream destination Egypt, the land of pyramids and pharaohs! She wishes to be a globetrotter one day. Debarati possesses a diploma in Indian Vocal Classical from Kolkata regional centre of Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, India.
Social Service :
Background : Her upbringing in an orthodox joint family of 15 heads in Kolkata, the 'ashramic' environment of her school, and other surroundings has instilled in ethical values and all the while resulting in an appreciation for distinctly human things in her. Later, following this, she became inclined and involved with various social activities.
Promoting STEM for women : As a volunteer of IEEE, Debarati is involved in Inspiring, Engaging, Encouraging and Empowering Women through the Pre-University Outreach Program of IEEE called STAR (Student- Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist). Also, she is dedicated to facilitating development of programs and activities that promote the entry and retention of women in STEM. Her main aim is to work together towards closing the gender gap in technology.
Working for Women Emancipation : She is associated with one Public Philanthropic Trust ‘Sarada Kalyan Bhandar’, Midnapore as Volunteer to serve the under privileged Children, Youth, and Women of neighbouring area through Education, Nutrition, Healthcare and Environmental Awareness with a motivation of Women Emancipation. The smiling faces of hundreds of beneficiaries and their heartwarming blessings are the main inspiration and driving force for this service to continue.
