This project demonstrates how role play and collaborative storytelling, in the form of virtual table top role playing games (VTTRPGs), can be used for social inclusion and a reduction of anomie in virtual spaces.
This is because VTTRPGs allow for the formation of spaces that lead to ‘the processes of social interaction and activity with others, in as, to develop the individual as a result of their relations to said experiences and to other individuals involved in these experiences’ (Mead: 1934: 223). In other words, they provide a stabilising sense of group socialisation and community belonging that is just as powerful and real as any physical social equivalent.
Furthermore, this project highlights how that the study of online spaces can continue to shed light on the more general human conditions for being in the world, as well as how people make life meaningful both on and offline.
