About our Workshops
The Writing Center holds workshops every semester. These workshops serve as supplements to concepts you may be learning in your composition courses. Examples of workshops we host include:

Additional Workshops may be offered as well. In the past, we have done other topics such as Poetry, Novella, and APA Citation Workshops. Workshops will be announced in advance, and instructors will be notified. Look out for our bulletin board announcements and fliers throughout the English & Communications building. Workshop Descriptions
Analysis
Strengthen analyzing skills within an essay or build connections between claims and evidence. Also learn how to identify claims, evidence, and analyses within any form of writing.
Anti-Plagiarism
Prevent any form of plagiarizing in your writing by giving credit where it is due. Refresh on other skills such as how to cite, paraphrase, and quote within an essay.
College Writing Crash Course
A condensed collection of workshops such as organization, descriptive writing, and analysis. This three-in-one workshop is a great introduction to college and academic writing.
Critical Reading Strategies
Refresh on reading skills that strengthen comprehension and active reading with different strategies to stay engaged with the reading. Also see how fellow tutors practice active reading.
Grammar I
This Grammar workshop focuses on subject-verb agreements, vague pronouns, and fragments & run-ons. Refresh on these grammatical rules and devices with activities as well.
Grammar II
A grammar workshop focusing on punctuation rules and erros, faulty, parallelism, unclear pronoun reference. Refresh with workshop activities as well.
Organization
Improve the flow of an essay by learning different methods to organize your writing. Also identify what the introduction, body, and conclusion should explain.
Paragraph Construction
Construct key elements of a paragraph such as topic sentences, evidence, and analysis. Tackle how these aspects work in tandem with one another to produce a smooth flow within each paragraph.
Professional Writing
Delve briefly into three different forms of professional writing such as resumes, scholarships, and essays. Learn and discuss about concise writing and presentation to prepare you for jobs and professional endeavors.
Refining Topics
This workshop focuses on topics for your current writing project and making that topic(s) more specific, interesting, focused, and meaningful.
Scholarship Essays
An in-depth version of scholarship writing from our Professional Writing workshop that assists in the planning and writing aspects of a scholarship essay. This includes areas such as brainstorming and prewriting to constructing the introduction, body, and conclusion that work well with the chosen topic(s).
Thesis Elevation
An in-depth version of the Thesis Statement workshop that caters for both essay and research papers (EN110/111). Construct more elevated and complex thesis statements.
Thesis Statement
An introduction on creating, organizing, and using thesis statements for essays. Also learn about types of thesis statements and how to express clear and concise claims.
They Say, I Say
A workshop to go in tandem with the Research for Writing course or EN-111. Find out how to effectively utilize sources for research papers and applying them to the essay.
Topic Invention
A brainstorming workshop to guide writers into creating or building a topic(s) for their current writing project and assignments.
