There are several ways we make disciples and teach them to obey Jesus in safe, non-pressuring environments. In DeafChurch Together, we call this ‘Faith Formation’ because our goal is to help people mature in faith as a reflection of God’s goodness and grace. To form in the image of Jesus.
In other words, formation is not just about accumulating knowledge, it is about being changed from the inside out. The Apostle Paul’s mission was to “present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Col. 1:28). What does maturity in Christ include? Living from our identities as sons and daughters of God, living led by the Holy Spirit, glorifying the Father through our obedience to Jesus, joining His mission in reaching the lost and the broken, [continue?]
There are two gospel Sacraments given us by Jesus and five more scriptural church Sacraments established over the first 500 years of the Christian church. The Anglican Church has a sacramental theology that sees sacraments as the holy places where heaven and earth overlap.
C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity describes core Christian beliefs as “… a hall out of which doors open into several rooms. If I can bring anyone into that hall, I shall have done what I attempted. But it is in the rooms, not in the hall, that there are fires and chairs and meals. The hall is a place to wait in, not a place to live in.”
“Then Jesus came to them. He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end.” Matthew 28:18-20
Solid Christian beliefs should appear in multiple places in the Bible. This is why the lectionary has four related scriptures on a common theme: Old Testament (or Acts), Psalms, Epistles, and Gospels. When a single scripture is pulled out of context, it is still inspired, but can be misused. This is part of the reason focusing on the overall biblical narrative is important and provides our context for interpretation.
