North America 24 MPH

The North America map was created via Hexgimp. I based this map off the following NASA map: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA03377 . My intent with the map was to have the hexes be 24 miles from short side to short side. To do this I had to do the following:

  • Initially I resized the 1 pixel per meter image to be closed to 24 miles per hex (hexes in hex gimp are 31 pixels high by 38 pixels wide).

  • The original projection is in Mercator which creates more distance distortion as one travels north. I corrected this updating the map in 10 degree sections latitude to fit properly.

  • I also averaged the east-west longitude. Technically for a better equal area map I should have the East-West Longitude get smaller, but I wanted to keep the map rectangular in size.

Hexes were determined based upon several websites I reviewed primarily the EPA's Ecoregions (https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/level-iii-and-iv-ecoregions-continental-united-states ) and a planting website (https://bplant.org/regions.php).

Below is an extract of Appalachia in the Eastern US.
