Segmenting
Segmenting
Children need to be able to hear a whole word and say every sounds that they hear. This will help them to spell words phonetically.
In simple terms, segmenting is the reverse of blending. It is the process of separating the sounds in a word in order to write words phonetically.
Also, when learning to write sentences and looking at sentence structure segmenting can be used to break down how many words are in a sentence. To help the segmenting process we often teach the children to clap out each word in a sentence/ each sound in a word.
The video clip below shows how children can begin segmenting by hearing each sound in a word. The second half of the video then goes on to show the process of blending to read.
