Phonics
Apart from pre-reading skills taught during your child's Nursery years; Phonics is one of the main strategies in Reception that we use to teach reading.
Throughout the year in phonics we teach children to first identify the phonemes; secondly blend phonemes to read and finally segment words into their phonemes to be able to write.
All phonics lessons last 15 to 20 minutes. Lessons are fast, fun and frequent. Each lesson is made up of four parts.
- Revise - revision of the sounds already learnt.
- Teach - teach the new sound of the day.
- Practise - practise reading and/ or spelling the new phoneme/ grapheme.
- Apply - play a game or write a new word/ sentence showing application of the new sound learnt.
