The Merdeka mascots represent Malaysia’s Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities in traditional attire, celebrating cultural diversity, unity, and national pride while connecting Kenangan Coffee with Malaysia’s multicultural identity.
For this project, I created a monorail transit ads featuring my illustrations of Malay, Chinese, and Indian characters to reflect Malaysia’s diversity. I used both half-body and full-body designs to represent the multiracial community that commonly uses the monorail, promoting Kenangan Coffee with a 1 Malaysia spirit.
There are two designs. The right-side monorail, uses half-body characters holding Kenangan Coffee, with elements such as the Hibiscus, Hornbill, Twin Towers, Sultan Abdul Samad Building, and other heritage elements, set in patriotic colors. The left-side design, I used the same elements, but with full-body characters next to an oversized Kenangan Coffee cup, with a Malaysian flag background, making the visuals eye-catching from the road. I chose these elements because the monorail passes through these real locations, making the visuals feel connected to the environment. I also included flora and fauna to create a sense of balance, harmony, and national pride.
I created a 15-second motion graphic cinema ad to highlight Kenangan Coffee’s drinks, desserts, and the Merdeka 68th promo, where the second purchase is only RM6.80. This seasonal ad celebrates Malaysia’s independence with a limited-time offer. I chose cinema ads for their strong visual and audio impact. Since this is Kenangan Coffee’s first cinema ad, I wanted it to feel bold and memorable.
I planned the timing, transitions, and animated text to keep it engaging. Although it's motion graphic, I personally shot the dessert footage and used it in the ad to make it look more tempting and real. I also added illustrations to make the ad more visually interesting. To match the Merdeka theme, I used red, white, blue, and yellow colors, and festive elements to add a patriotic feel and connect with the celebration.
