"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more" ~ Oprah Winfrey
Dear Dawn to Dusk Community,
As we continue to enjoy the crisp and mostly pleasant fall weather, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our entire community—especially our participants, their families, and all those who support them.
As Dawn to Dusk has grown to meet the evolving needs of our consumers, we’ve worked diligently to expand services, close service gaps, and strengthen delivery in areas where we once fell short. Our team has now grown to more than 50 dedicated coworkers, all becoming increasingly aligned with our mission of enhancing the quality of life and wellbeing of our participants and their families—guided by our CARE values: C = Compassion, A = Action, R = Respect, and E = Empowerment.
While there is still work to be done and our best is yet to come, it is deeply rewarding to see the smiles of our participants, to hear positive feedback from families, and even to receive constructive criticism that keeps us accountable and helps us improve. Thanks to my coworkers, our participants, and you, I genuinely look forward to going to work each day. I find great joy in being of service and solving problems. As the legendary entrepreneur Warren Buffett once said, “I tap dance to work every day.” That’s exactly how I feel—and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve and as Oprah says, I hope to have more of it.
With gratitude,
~ Sesh Subramanian

What’s Cooking in October 🍎🎃
In October, participants put their real-life kitchen skills to work during our What’s Cooking activity! Two groups prepared two delicious fall recipes, giving everyone a chance to practice reading directions, gathering materials, measuring, and working safely with staff support. One group made Pumpkin Ice Cream, starting by checking their utensils and ingredients and helping staff pre-measure vanilla and pumpkin pie spice. They learned how to whip heavy cream with a hand mixer until stiff peaks formed, then slowly added sweetened condensed milk, pumpkin purée, and vanilla. The mixture was ladled into cups, covered, and placed in the freezer. This recipe offered great opportunities to follow a sequence from start to finish and to notice how ingredients change texture when mixed and chilled.
The second group baked Apple Baked Oatmeal, focusing on food preparation, safety knife use, and following directions in order. Participants put on gloves, diced apples with support, and measured oats, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, sugar, and flaxseed meal. They then added applesauce, milk, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter—stirring after each step to ensure nothing was missed. The mixture was smoothed into baking pans, baked, and served once cooled. This recipe was perfect for practicing turn-taking, stirring, and staying with a task until it’s complete. Both recipes reinforced independence, kitchen safety, and functional math skills like counting, measuring, and following multi-step directions. Most importantly, participants discovered that—with the right support—they can make real, delicious food for themselves and their friends!
🎨 Pumpkin Decorating Fun!
This month, participants really dove into their creative side with a festive pumpkin decorating activity. Earlier in the fall, they picked pumpkins at Giamarese Farms in East Brunswick, and now they finally got to transform them into something fun and personal. Tables were covered in fall-themed supplies—glitter, feathers, googly eyes, beads, buttons, ribbons, and a mix of craft materials—so everyone could make something unique. Some participants went all-out silly with big eyes, pipe cleaner hair, and crooked smiles, while others created cozy, autumn-inspired pumpkins with leaves and warm colors.
Staff offered support with gluing and setup, but the ideas and designs came entirely from the participants. The activity was a wonderful opportunity to practice planning, selecting materials, and completing a project from start to finish. When everyone was done, their pumpkins were displayed throughout the center—brightening up the space and bringing a true feeling of fall for families and visitors to enjoy. 🍂
🧘♀️ In October, participants continued to build strength, flexibility, and self-regulation through our weekly Yoga sessions led by Occupational Therapist Lisa Caruso. Each Tuesday afternoon, Lisa transformed the Life Skills space into a calm studio with mats, soft music, and visual supports so that participants of all ability levels could join in. Sessions began with gentle breathing exercises, helping everyone slow down, notice their bodies, and prepare to move with intention. From there, Lisa guided participants through stretches, seated poses, and supported standing positions designed to improve balance, core strength, and joint mobility. These sessions offered more than physical benefits—they provided a chance to practice mindfulness, body awareness, and relaxation, leaving participants centered and refreshed for the rest of the day. 🌿
⛳ This month, participants explored a mix of active and tabletop leisure skills. In the Life Skills space, staff set up a Mini golf course so everyone could learn how to putt. Participants practiced how to hold the club, line up the ball, and use just the right amount of force to reach the target. Staff broke the activity down step by step and connected it to familiar bowling skills, helping everyone feel confident and successful. Mini golf was a hit—it encouraged coordination, focus, and turn-taking while keeping the atmosphere light and fun.
🎲 On quieter days, groups gathered around the tables to learn new board games like chess and checkers. Staff introduced the pieces, demonstrated how to move them, and paired players into teams so they could learn from and support one another.
Both types of activities helped participants practice thinking ahead, following rules, and showing good sportsmanship. By trying out both active and tabletop games this month, participants discovered new ways to enjoy their free time at Dawn to Dusk—whether moving, thinking, or playing together.
In October, our teams made the most of the beautiful fall weather with visits to some of our favorite local spots. One of the biggest hits was Spirit Halloween, always a grand treat for our participants! Many enjoyed walking through the displays, trying on costumes, and pressing the buttons on the spooky decorations to get into the Halloween spirit. Staff provided gentle support for anyone who was nervous, helping everyone take part in the fun.
Groups also spent time at North Brunswick Community Park, taking walks, playing games, and enjoying fresh air and movement before the colder months arrive. On chillier days, teams headed indoors to Princeton Market Fair, where they could walk around, people-watch, and practice community behaviors in a safe, supportive environment.
We also visited local libraries in Cranbury and Plainsboro, which offered great opportunities to build comfort in the community, make choices, and use quiet voices while exploring books and displays. And when the weather was just right, we took a trip to Sayen House and Gardens, where participants could relax and appreciate the fall scenery. As we move out of October and the temperatures begin to drop, our teams will start shifting to more indoor outings—but the spirit of exploration and connection will continue all season long. 🍂
Lunch Outings:
October’s lunch outings gave participants a wonderful opportunity to practice real-world skills like ordering food, managing money, and enjoying a meal out with friends. Teams visited Scotto’s Pizza for slices and pasta, Gyro King for something new, and Wendy’s for a simple, familiar favorite.
Some groups also enjoyed team-choice outings, returning to popular spots such as CAVA and Olive Garden. Each outing encouraged participants to read menus, make choices, interact with staff, and use social skills in authentic community settings.
Staff continue to coordinate outings carefully so that teams can have comfortable, meaningful dining experiences without crowding the same restaurant at once. These experiences not only build independence, but also make lunch a time for connection, confidence, and fun. 🍽️
Special Events:
🚜 This month, participants enjoyed a special fall outing to Giamarese Farms in East Brunswick for a true autumn experience. Everyone loaded up and headed to the farm for a day filled with learning, exploration, and hands-on fun. The visit began with a tractor-pulled hayride around the property. As the wagon rolled through the fields, staff and farm guides described what was growing and explained how the farm changes with the seasons. It was a great opportunity for participants to see where food comes from and connect what they eat to how it’s grown.
A highlight of the day was tasting fresh corn on the cob—right from the field! Many were surprised to learn that sweet corn can be eaten raw. It was crunchy, sweet, and a big hit among the group. Participants also loved visiting the farm animals, including pigs and horses, which delighted many animal enthusiasts.
To finish the trip, everyone walked the pumpkin trail to pick out a pumpkin to bring back to the center. Later in the month, those same pumpkins became part of our pumpkin decorating art activity, letting participants experience the full process from farm to finished project. This outing beautifully combined learning, sensory exploration, and seasonal traditions, making it a memorable highlight of our fall adventures. 🎃
