“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.” ~ Nelson Mandela
Dear Dawn to Dusk Community,
The month of January saw the launch of our Physical Therapy services with our PT, Agota Rakoczi. We welcome Agota to Dawn to Dusk. In late December and early January, Agota and I worked on setting up our Physical Therapy equipment and supplies in our Sensory Hub. On January 13th, our Physical Therapy services were launched with 6 of our Day Program participants. In February and March, our Physical Therapy services will be expanded and be offered to more participants. Since the launch of our Occupational Therapy services in April 2023 with 6 participants, our OT, Lisa Caruso has successfully provided services to several of our participants and continues to do so. Currently 16 of our Day Program participants receive Occupational Therapy from Lisa, with more waiting to be enrolled. I am excited to launch the next phase of our habilitative therapy services for our participants and continue to look for a Speech and Language Therapist to add to our team.
As I reflect on our role and our mission as an organization providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, I am reminded of a story that was recently shared with me.
Once upon a time, there was a man walking on the beach. He looked down the beach and saw a dancer. As he got closer, he noticed it was a young man, reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what is it that you are doing?”. The young man paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” ”Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” ask the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the wiseman commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”
We continue to strive and make a difference to one and all that we serve. Wishing you good health and wellbeing always.

It is our pleasure at Dawn to Dusk to offer a schedule of activities that provide opportunities for learning and continued education. Our activities are specifically designed to address these four pillars of health and wellbeing:
activities of daily life skill-building,
various forms of creative self-expression,
activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing, and

To kick off the new year, participants took on the task of refreshing their personal lockers with guidance and support from staff. This hands-on activity focused on building essential life skills, such as cleaning and organization, while also fostering independence. Participants learned how to properly wipe down surfaces, dust off accumulated dirt, and sort through their belongings. It was also an opportunity to reflect on what they needed to bring home or reorganize for better accessibility. By taking responsibility for their own spaces, participants gained confidence in managing their personal items and took pride in maintaining a tidy and organized environment to start the year off right!
Hope, health, and happiness might seem simple, but they became the foundation for a meaningful Creative Writing session where participants crafted their New Year's recipes! After reflecting on what these values meant to them, whether it was finding joy in small moments, caring for their well-being, or staying optimistic about the future, they listed their ingredients like kindness, laughter, and time with loved ones. They then wrote the directions for blending these elements into their lives, creating a personal guide for the year ahead. Sharing their recipes with the group sparked others' eyes with creative touches like "a pinch of adventure" or a "sprinkle of gratitude." This activity encouraged self-expression, reflection, and a positive start to the New Year.
Our center provided a peaceful escape in the quiet room, where participants embraced mindful meditation as a way to recharge from their busy mornings. They practiced calming breathing exercises, enjoyed relaxing with a good book, or simply took in the serene atmosphere. The experience was enhanced by soothing music, such as nature sounds, soft piano melodies, and gentle instrumental rhythms. This tranquil break offered participants the perfect opportunity to refocus, unwind, and nurture their well-being.

Participants recently explored the fascinating game of croquet, learning about its rich history and how it has been enjoyed throughout the years. They practiced essential techniques, like swinging the mallet and aiming at the wickets, while also discovering the strategy behind the game. It was a wonderful mix of learning and fun, with participants embracing the challenge and excitement of this timeless activity.
Community Outings:
As January began, our participants enjoyed a variety of engaging community outings filled with fun and learning. At Knob Hill Country Lanes, teams cheered each other on while bowling. A visit to Shoprite turned into a mission to gather supplies for our What’s Cooking activity, while a Walmart scavenger hunt had participants searching for items and practicing teamwork.
Participants enjoyed a cozy outing at the South Brunswick Library, exploring books and resources. These outings blended activity, discovery, and connection, kicking off the New Year on a positive note.
Lunch Outings:
In January, lunch outings continued to be a highlight for participants, offering opportunities to share meals and explore new flavors together. This month, we visited Nanami Sushi, Olive Garden, and Panera Bread, enjoying everything from fresh sushi to classic Italian and comforting soups and sandwiches. These outings not only allowed participants to practice menu selection and budgeting but also fostered independence and community engagement in a fun and delicious way.
Special Events:
Pajama / Flannel Day: This January, we started the year with a much-loved tradition: Pajama and Flannel Day! Participants and staff embraced the cozy theme, arriving in comfortable pajamas and stylish flannel outfits that added a touch of warmth to the season. The day was filled with smiles and laughter, with everyone enjoying the laid-back, relaxed atmosphere that this special dress-up day brings.
Mark your calendars for next month’s fun: Sports Jersey Day on February 7th, where you can rep your favorite team, and don’t forget to wear pink, red, or purple on February 14th to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We can’t wait to see everyone’s festive looks, more exciting events are on the way!
Key of Awesome: The rhythm took over our center as the incredible Jim Gavin from The Key of Awesome brought his lively percussion session to life. The sounds of pan drums, cabasas, tambourines, and more filled the auditorium, creating an electric atmosphere that had everyone tapping their feet and smiling ear to ear. The booming beats and vibrant energy left a lasting impression, making it a day of pure joy and unforgettable music! And of course, we continue with Music with Maureen, finetuning our listening and playing skills.
