In addition to my work in higher education, I have experience in ministry. My call to ministry has been distinctly "bi-vocational" meaning that my experience is limited to only part-time work, while I maintain another full-time career (in my case this is teaching).
Currently, I serve as commissioned pastor at Kinsman Presbyterian Church in Kinsman, Ohio. My responsibilities include planning and leading worship, teaching small groups, and congregational communications (such as the monthly newsletter). I also moderate the Session (the church board) and sit on various committees both within the congregation and the presbytery. I also have extensive "pulpit supply" experience (churchspeak for leading worship in the absence of a pastor) in several jurisdictions, including Eastminster Presbytery (Northeast Ohio), Presbytery of Cincinnati (Southwest Ohio, Southeast Indiana, and Northern Kentucky), and Presbytery of the Western Reserve (Northeast/Northern Ohio).Â
My theology is progressive in nature (please see my statement of faith). I believe that theology is one way that connects us to the divine but also draws the community together. I believe firmly that God is love, and the purpose of religious tradition is to show that love to the world. I also believe that science and theology are not antagonistic disciplines but instead use different frameworks for understanding the world.
At Tri-C, I teach in the religious studies department as affiliate faculty (my primary full-time appointment is in the department of psychology) and focus on Christianity courses.
