FOOTBALL STAFF EXPECTATIONS
Why you were selected:
Character: You can’t teach it (Trust/ Loyalty/ Invest in Kids)
Intellect: Organization/ Anticipation/ Common Sense
People Skills: Teach/ Peer/ Ambassador of the program/ Communication
Football Knowledge: Understanding of the game- Fundamentals/ Techniques/ Drills
Fit: Staff/ Institution/ Me/ Wives- (RELATIONSHIPS MATTER)
Football Staff Loyalty:
Loyalty to staff, players, program, school. This is a must if we are to be successful.
No second guessing, fellow coaches, head coach.
If you can’t say anything good about our program or someone in it don’t say anything at all.
No surprises,, anticipate potential problems so we can take action.
Organization:
Voice your opinions in meetings-not on the practice field. Be precise.
Be the most organized coach on the staff. Meet the standards of excellence that the entire staff will strive to achieve.
Assist in preparation of game plan and practice schedules.
Role model for fellow coaches.
Be a problem-solver once we have identified a concern.
Understand the difference between providing INPUT into a decision and IMPLEMENTING a decision.
Coach your position:
Refer players to their position coach.
Evaluate your players after each game and each practice.
Don’t take frustrations out on your players:
Was he coached to do what he had to do or told what to do?
You are responsible for getting YOUR players ready for GAME DAY.
Give credit to players and associates- accept the blame for failures.
Everyone must stress the same things:
Uncomplicated-everyone understands what we are doing.
Sound, execution (must understand our philosophy).
Aggressive.
Smart utilization of personnel-be objective.
Coach on the field, lecture in the classroom.
Discipline- no exceptions- realistic and consistent.
Enthusiastic (If you can’t be enthusiastic FAKE IT!)
Starts with the coaching staff.
Never loaf or allow your players to loaf.
Punctuality:
Meetings
Practice
Team Meals
Trips
Have sufficient room for your drills-utilize the field. Give your fellow coach his share of the field.
