Problem Analysis
I feel I posses excellent problem analysis skills because I have shown the ability to collect data on the upcoming opponent and determine what they do best as a team in order to win games. I can take that information and determine why they are having success and format our plan of attack to offset the strengths of what they want to accomplish. After compiling that information and determining their tendencies I can present this information to our players in a clear and concise manner where they can receive the information that I have gathered to use in building a successful game plan that will be used in attacking the upcoming opponent.
Judgment
I feel I have a great ability in determining when student-athletes have had enough meeting time or practice time. I determine this by trying to read body language in meetings if players are sitting with good posture asking questions, correcting each other's mistakes if I pick up on these characteristics I know I can continue the meeting a little longer than usual about another twenty to thirty minutes longer. When I observe them interacting with each other starting to have one on one conversations about topics outside of football. I also pick up on situations if they lay down in the meeting or if they come in the meeting eating or already talking about topics outside of football I know I need to get them in and out of the meeting quickly because the meeting will start to move toward storytelling and other topics and I know I need to shorten the meeting a little bit a let them get on about their business. In situations where I know, the information I need to discuss with them is important and they come in with an attitude that they may not be very attentive that day I make sure I get firm with someone from the beginning to set the tone that this meeting will be serious business and it is something that we have to get done right now. I also make some decisions based on how many days we have already met and how we have been conducting ourselves up to this point and sometimes I may cancel a meeting if they look like they don’t want to be there.
Organizational Ability
I feel I have obtained the ability to implement game plans and staff responsibility by putting coaches in situations that allow them to use their strengths. For example, I have one coach who doesn’t have a lot of experience with on-the-field coaching but has excellent computer skills. Instead of putting him in situations where he has to handle a lot off the on-field responsibilities, I have him in charge of computer breakdown and computer analysis of upcoming opponents when it is time for on the field coaching I let him run a drill or two at practice until he can become more comfortable in those situations instead of putting into that situation knowing that he isn’t comfortable with on the field coaching for a full practice. I also feel I have acquired the ability to make sure the first staff meeting and first player meeting will set the tone for the upcoming season.
Decisiveness
I feel I have acquired knowledge through previous situations and experiences that I try to put together scenarios they make occur that I can draw from that I have thought about if they were to occur how I would react and this has allowed me to be decisive in making the decision and feel comfortable about the decision that has been made and not just go on gut reaction all of the time. I feel learning vicariously has given me the ability to be decisive and make decisions and feel good about them no matter what the outcome will be.
Leadership
I have been in a position of leadership for a number of years. I feel I can draw on personal experiences and relationships that I have with others who have played or worked around the game. I feel like as a football coach you have to have the ability to inspire others to achieve at a high level on consistent bases. I feel I lead by example first and foremost. As a leader, your team has to receive from you that they know you are totally committed to their overall team success and their individual success.
Sensitivity
I feel personal experiences have prepared me to be sensitive to the needs of others. I feel working at a private college, historically black university, and public state school has prepared me to understand the needs and beliefs of others. Recruiting different areas of the country has also given me the chance to understand how to interact and communicate in different settings.
Stress Tolerance
Coaching has given me the ability to become a patient person to understand that success does not happen instantly. I learned that you have to have the ability to stay the course and plan your work and work your plan in order to achieve and be consistent. I have learned that certain decisions will impact the overall group and you have to make those decisions based on the well-being of the program while understanding that you are still dealing with people.
Communication
I have demonstrated the ability to conduct meetings that focus on installing the game plan by using techniques that will incorporate multiple learning styles. Communication with the coaching staff about staff responsibilities, code of ethics, how to deal with conflict, the importance of deadlines, the importance of staff communication, and building honest relationships in the program, university, and alumni. I have demonstrated the ability to conduct beginning of the year staff meetings, team meetings, end of the year staff meetings, end of the year meetings, one on one staff evaluations, one on one player evaluations and the ability to implement goals and objectives that will assist in the overall success of the team or group.
