COACH-PLAYER RELATIONSHIP
Each coach is accountable for his position/players. If the players do not perform well, it is you who will be responsible. Players need to understand that they are to deal with their position coach first, their coordinator second and if necessary, the head coach last. Same goes for the staff.
Reinforce the rules and requirements of the Head Coach. Do not indicate by ignorance or indifference a lack of support for player responsibility. The primary purpose of discipline is to help the program.
We will run a disciplined program. Players thrive on discipline. I do not mean harassment. Discipline breeds success, harassment breeds contempt! Discipline is to help the player become a better person and to help us WIN. Disciplined players can do what they’re supposed to do, when they’re supposed to do it, the way it’s supposed to be done. Undisciplined players won’t last in this program.
Each coach must find the key to motivating his players. Discover the personality, home life and priorities of each individual. In the player’s personal life, which person is held with the greatest respect?
The coach’s credibility is based on his in-depth knowledge, teaching ability, communication skills, conviction, consistency and fairness. Players will always respond if you make them better!
Be properly prepared and organized for all official acts…meetings, drills, practice. Be thoroughly prepared for any “personal” player meeting. (Keep Records)
Cardinal Rule- Never discuss one player’s problems with another player.
Do not berate a player. It’s not personal its business! Attack problems, not people!
Maintain professionalism at all times. Players must respect you first. It is not necessary for you to be their friend!
Meetings are for talk, practices are for work.
Be sure players realize that meetings are serious business.
Be aware of any potential role which a player at your position might hold. Punt blockers, etc. Find quality roles for players. It will make him a better person- a better athlete.
