David Ball was a three-sport standout at Spaulding High in Barre and three-season, two-sport star at the NCAA Division 1 level. He is a proud alumni of the University of New Hampshire where in track & field he set school records in the winter and spring. In the fall, on the gridiron he was a three-time all-American wide receiver setting several national records. All of this at the Division 1 level.
While at Spaulding, Ball was an All-State selection in both football and basketball and was an individual champion in track and field. After sweeping the jumping events in his senior campaign he was named Male Gatorade Track & Field athlete of the year. He scored over 1,000 career points in basketball, helped lead the Crimson Tide to the 2002 Division I state title, and was a captain of the 2002 Vermont Shrine football team.
After a post-grad year at Worcester Academy where he was named Male athlete of the year for his accolades in all three sports, he went on to UNH where he was a four-year starter at wide receiver. He set most of the program and conference receiving records, while also being in the top three in several national categories. He is still mentioned today in the same sentence as his high achieving counterparts Jerry Rice and Cooper Kupp.
At the conclusion of his collegiate career in 2007 he left quite a mark with a NCAA D-1 FCS national record as the most prolific scorer with 58 touchdown receptions – beating the old mark set by future NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (50 TDs). Ball also ended with 4,655 receiving yards – second most all-time and only 38 yrds behind Rice. His 304 catches topped the list as well and he also had the most games with at least 100 receiving yards. Truly one of the greatest.
In 2007, Ball joined the Chicago Bears as a practice squad player. After moving on from the Bears he secured a roster spot with the New York Jets for a short stint. Over the next 5 years he spent time with 4 teams in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League respectively. In 2013, Ball was back in the NFL as he ended his football career with a short, preseason stint as a Philadelphia Eagle.
While in college, the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association twice voted Ball the state’s Male Athlete of the Year, in 2005-06 and in 2006-07. He was inducted into the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 and his No. 3 jersey is one of three football numbers retired by the Wildcats. In 2017 he was inducted into the VPA Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Varsity Club at Worcester Academy in 2024 as a multi-sport athlete and 1 week later was inducted into the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame again for his accolades and impact on Vermont sports across all 3 seasons.
