The Science System Advisory Group was established by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in early 2024 to provide advice to the government on strengthening the science, innovation and technology system. The Committee responded to the Phase 1 consultation of this group with a response focused on the need to encourage collaboration and connectivity, particularly around research data.

The terms of reference for CoDiR specify that we should renew the committee annually, and that there should be at least one quarter turnover of membership. We therefore ask for Expressions of Interest in joining CoDiR from members of the wider CoDiR Forum, or others interested in data-related issues. We will particularly welcome Expressions of Interest from early career researchers.
CoDiR will consist of 8-10 volunteers. This Committee will foster a sense of community among those interested in Data in Research. Sharing best practice and building relationships, both nationally and internationally, will add value to the work that we do, and open up new opportunities for collaborative research with enhanced benefit to Aotearoa New Zealand. CoDiR will facilitate discussion; promote principles, policies, and practices; support international linkages; and provide advice on any relevant policy and strategy, all in the context of the values and principles embodied in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Please read the Terms of Reference for more details.
Interested? Please send:
A paragraph detailing your interest in data in research
A short statement of what you would bring to the role (or CV)
To richard.hartshorn@canterbury.ac.nz and michelle.blake@waikato.ac.nz by Friday 2 June. Please use “Committee on Data in Research” in the subject line. The current CoDiR will evaluate the Expressions of Interest and then submit to the wider forum a recommendation for endorsement of the proposed membership of CoDiR for the next year (from 1 July).

Report from the Committee to the CoDiR Forum. Key CoDiR accomplishments in 2022:
CoDiR terms of reference were developed and adopted by the wider Forum.
Initial Committee membership was proposed and endorsed.
CoDiR has met virtually twice, and face to face once, in addition to the meetings of the Forum that were part of the establishment process.
An initial project to conduct a review of the Research Data Landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand was identified, has been funded by MBIE, and is under way.
Other project ideas are being developed.
A CoDiR website is being developed (it is still a work in progress: https://diraotearoa.github.io/)
CoDiR presentations will be made at the eResearch NZ 2023 conference (https://www.eresearchnz2023.org.nz/) in Hamilton, 15-17 February.

We propose to undertake a landscape review of data in research. The review will - Summarise the research data landscape in Aotearoa; identifying the key actors, institutions and initiatives in both the public and private sectors; Identify challenges and opportunities for the current research data ecosystem; Consider issues relating to Māori data sovereignty.

This submission is from a small group of colleagues from diverse backgrounds and roles in research who have convened around a common theme of data in research. The submitters are part of a formative group looking to establish a cross-sector committee on data in research at the request of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.
