SKETCH ALONG WITH PATRICK O'DONNELL
Sketch along with artist and educator Patrick O'Donnell as he walks you through the process of how he draws his adorable cat, Bruce. What you draw is up to you! You can draw your version of Bruce, or pick your own animal, toy, or object to draw.
Blocking in with Basic Shapes
In Part 1: Blocking in with Basic Shapes, Patrick sketches the basic shapes that make up Bruce the cat. Grab a pencil and journal or piece of paper and sketch along!
Line Drawing
In Part 2: Refining Form with Contour Line, Patrick fills in the lines that help Bruce's image come together from the shapes drawn in Part 1. Grab a pencil and journal or piece of paper and sketch along!
Shading and Tone
In Part 3: Creating Form with Tone and Texture, Patrick uses shading and texture to transform his line drawing of Bruce the cat so that Bruce looks like he could move right off the page. Grab a pencil and journal or piece of paper and sketch along!
Putting it Together
In Part 4: Review, Patrick talks through all of the steps he took to create his drawing of Bruce the cat. He explains the process and gives you encouragement to keep creating art with a pencil and paper.
