Darkgate is a picturesque town on the English-Welsh border in Herefordshire. It has just enough to do that no one has a chance to get bored, but not so much that it's metropolitan. The western side is predominantly rural, housing farms, dense forested areas nearby and suburban houses. The east, meanwhile, is more densely populated with terraced houses, garages and office buildings. The centre of town is a more recreational area with many businesses setting up from bars to shops to cafes.
Due to the main organisations of the area being supernatural in nature, it has become somewhat of a hub for the esoteric, the strange and the outcast. Not to mention they have a pretty good club scene.
Much of Darkgate lives below the abstraction layer - we don't worry about who is the mayor, the cost of houses, how many churches there are, whether or not Glenys put the bins out. Ultimately, the spirit of the town is determined by those who inhabit it - by the Covenant, and by the forces that help or oppose them.
In the town square of Darkgate, right in the centre of the action, every night the ethereals meet. A cacophony of seemingly unrelated eccentric individuals who all just love being a part of the city. Sure, some of them seem a bit strong on the idea of vengeance, but a lot of them are super mellow and chilled out!
This is the Board of Ethereals and they’re here to help.
Of course, being a group of incorporeals has its problems. The help they can provide isn’t particularly physical, and that’s besides the large quantity of differing views and lack of rules within the board. Total chaos, some may call it. But the Board? They love the incoherence! It’s what they’re all about! Peace, love and a little bit of chaos.
With the formation of the Covenant, the Board are loving the peace and love bit. Now? All they have to do is add the chaos back in.
Over at the western edge of Darkgate, spreading over a section of the hills and forests, the air is… unsettled. Animals run wild, and the people run wilder. Many avoid the area altogether, claiming that the land doesn’t want them there. That’s not true at all.
The Lycan Pack doesn’t want weaklings on their ground.
The strong of spirit and body alike are respected within the Pack. Resources are gathered, territories established and the vast ecosystem is respected, cultivated and loved. The weak do have their place, attempting to get stronger to topple those above them, not to mention tending the more menial tasks. The strongest would show how much stronger they are than the vampires and ethereals.
However, the formation of the covenant has stopped their more straightforward approach. They’re not quite sure now as to how they’ll prove that they’re the strongest faction in Darkgate by a country mile. Well… it can’t hurt to have a friendly bit of fighting, can it?
Nestled into the easternmost point of the town, Eclipse is the hottest club in Darkgate. It is a hotbed of alternative culture, loud music, excessive quantities of alcohol and a less excessive quantity of illegal drugs.
It is also where the Vampire Syndicate are based.
Each and every vampire in the Syndicate has a purpose. Keep a handle on local businesses with thralls. Ensure that law enforcement don’t find the bodies. Organise the next big gathering of their undead friends. Create essential concoctions of blood alchemy. Find easy food.
All are important in the clockwork inner systems of the Vampire Syndicate, and nobody interrupts their machine. Not even the Covenant.
