Title: Population health intern
Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis is a non-profit Catholic health ministry, full-service hospital that serves the greater Indianapolis metropolitan area with 24/7 emergency care, Level I trauma center, transplant center, comprehensive stroke center, and burn center. Additionally, there is a wide range of specialty care, including heart and vascular health, orthopedics, stroke care, cardiac rehabilitation, and critical care.
Ascension St. Vincent has a unique mission. as a Catholic health ministry. Rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as a healer, they commit to "serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable." In addition, Ascension St. Vincent has launched ABIDE, a framework that emphasizes Appreciation - Belongingness - Inclusivity - Diversity - Equity to pursue its mission and address racism and systematic injustice.
During my time with Ascension St. Vincent, I was responsible for reporting the daily Covid-19 patient status of all 22 hospitals under the Ascension St. Vincent umbrella using Tabeau and EMResource tools. Also, the population team that I was involved in focused on value-based programs and quality improvement. The main concentration was identifying opportunities and developing strategies for quality improvements, access to care, patient continuity of care, and outreach programs. One of my main responsibilities was to identify the utilization rate of aligned SNF facilities to develop an expansion plan. Additionally, I engaged in provider audits through data analysis to enhance a quality improvement project that involved various contractors.
Learning Objectives
Prior to my internship, I set learning objectives related to HSM program competencies:: develop negotiation skills through various negotiation meetings, expand and demonstrate practical communication skills, and improve time management skills.
I have successfully moved towards meeting these goals by engaging in payer and contractor negotiation meetings, interacting with main stakeholders, and faithfully carrying out assigned tasks in a given set period.
Personal Development
I acquired and further developed several skills at Ascension St. Vincent that will prove helpful for my future. My Skillset evolved to include analytical problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills in various projects in which I was involved. (e.g., provider audits, post-acute facilities expansion project). In terms of professional development, I would like to develop my communication skills even further by working on my public speaking skill since that is something I need to become more proficient at. In large gatherings, I continue to be cautious and quiet. However, my goal is to keep improving on it by speaking to professionals and team members to share my knowledge and ideas, whether in presentations or through informing people.
Academic Connections
In my time at IUPUI, I have taken various courses that have helped me build a solid foundation of knowledge for my role at Ascension St. Vincent. Despite this being my first role in a complex hospital setting, I felt partially more prepared because the Health Services Management program offers administrative and population health-related courses. I obtained a better understanding of how the medical industry works and healthcare terminologies enabled me to increase productivity. Health equity, health policy, strategic planning, and lean in healthcare are some of the courses that have made a difference.
