Pat Metheny played three nights at the Blue Note in Honolulu, Hawaii, May 9-11, 2025. Gladys and I saw him on Sunday, May 11, and it was amazing. There were two annoying audience members. One in particular actually got under Pat's skin when he would blurt out weird cheers in the middle of one of his solos. Pat would stop playing to indicate his frustration, but the man continued. Finally, Pat stopped and said: "Come on man, I play in sentences." That did the trick. Pat inadvertently shared his gift of improvisation with that one line! Pat's playing was extraordinary as always and it was an absolute pleasure to hear him talk about his songs and fellow musicians through the years. He was pleased that I called out "Last Train Home" when he asked if anyone knew the tune he had just played. One of his Orcehstrion assistants handed me one of his picks. Overall, it was another incredible performance by Maestro Metheny.
