Daniel is an ESRC-funded doctoral researcher and Senior Teaching Assistant in Applied Linguistics at Swansea University. His PhD explores young people's relationships with the Welsh language after compulsory education, with a particular focus on new speakers and the factors that shape language use, maintenance, and disengagement. His research interests include language policy and planning, language attitudes, and psycholinguistics, and he draws on both qualitative and quantitative methods in his work.
Alongside his doctoral research, Daniel has worked as a research assistant on a number of projects. He holds degrees in English Language and Social Research Methods, alongside a Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education and a CELTA qualification. During his undergraduate studies, he worked on the Step Up to Swansea participation programme, supporting students from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Alongside his academic work, he is a short fiction writer. His work has been published by Parthian Books, and his debut short story Cracked/Duck was shortlisted for the 2022 Rhys Davies Short Story Award. He is also a member of several professional bodies, including BAAL, EuroSLA, LAGB, the Celtic Students’ Association, and the Chartered College of Teachers.
