Planning and Preparation is essential for teachers since it provides a clear roadmap for effective instruction, ensuring that lessons are purposeful and aligned with learning goals. Thoughtful planning allows teachers to anticipate student needs, incorporate diverse resources, and differentiate instruction to accommodate varied learning styles and abilities. Additionally, preparation enables teachers to design assessments that measure progress and guide future instruction, ultimately supporting student growth and success.
1b: Knowing and Valuing Students
This component emphasizes the importance of teachers understanding their students as individuals and learners. This includes knowing their academic backgrounds, interests, strengths, and challenges to create a meaningful experience in the classroom. Teachers are expected to use this knowledge to tailor instruction, build strong relationships, and foster an environment where all students feel respected, valued, and supported.
This was a survey I administered to students early on in my student teaching placement. It allowed me the opportunity to meet my students where they were and begin developing rapport on an academic basis. I found success, using the results of this survey and directly forming lesson plans based off of it.
1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes
Focuses on the teacher’s ability to clearly define what students are expected to learn and achieve. Effective instructional outcomes should be specific, measurable, and aligned with learning standards. They should reflect high expectations and be appropriate for students' developmental levels. By setting clear and focused instructional goals, teachers guide students toward mastery of content and ensure that lessons are purposeful.
At the beginning of each lesson, I clearly outlined the objectives and explained their relevance to the students. This approach helped them connect with the material and understand the direct benefits of the class period. Making content meaningful and relatable is crucial for fostering participation, engagement, and long-term retention.

Emphasizes the importance of designing instruction that is well-organized and aligned with learning objectives. Teachers are expected to create lessons that flow logically, build on prior knowledge, and include a variety of instructional strategies, resources, and assessments. Effective planning ensures that all components of the lesson work together to meet the learning goals and support student understanding. This component stresses the need for clear structure and thoughtful design to promote student engagement and success.
Each week during my student teaching placement, I created a detailed weekly planner to stay organized and adaptable to any unexpected changes in the lesson. I believe that students can only be as successful in the classroom as their teacher is in planning and preparation. The more thorough and thoughtful my preparation, the more effectively I was able to execute lessons, leading to greater student success.
Building rapport with students early on has always been at the core of my teaching philosophy, as it creates a foundation for their growth and skill development. Students must be given every opportunity to reach their full potential, and teachers play a crucial role in facilitating that process. Educators should empower students, and this begins with thoughtful lesson planning, a structured weekly planner, and a backward design approach that ensures success for both the teacher and the students. Student engagement and participation are closely linked to the structure and relevance of the lessons, highlighting the importance of creating meaningful and well-organized instruction.
