MedX: Medicine in Extreme Environments is a Dal Med Group dedicated to exploring the clinical, physiological, logistical, and ethical challenges of providing care in austere, remote, or extreme settings.
Halifax Jr Lead
Ernest's journey in medicine at the Xtremes first began in the prehospital world as a volunteer medical responder with St John Ambulance in 2020. Since then, he has been a part of HRM and NS EMO responses to hurricanes and has undertaken specialized training with the Emergency Preparedness & Special Operations (EPSO) cadre at EHS. Having been certified in incident management and command of moderate to large-scale incidents, Ernest has served in a medical command role for several large scale gatherings here in Halifax.
Ernest's passion in the prehospital world extends beyond the clinical environment, which sees him being a member of the CAEP EMS/PTM committee and the multinational EMS PEP group. In research, he is currently leading a project investigating the growing involvement of physicians in the prehospital world particularly within EMS systems.
Outside of medicine, Ernest enjoys staying active and spending time outdoors when he can. He also has an afinity for all things ocean despite having had several close shaves on a multiday kayaking expedition in Malaysia a number of years ago. He is looking forward to supporting the growing interest amongst the DalMed community in the wide range of topics that fall under the auspices of the DalMedX group.
Senior Lead & Founder
Jessie is a Med 2 (Class of 2028) student at Dal Halifax going through the Military Medical Training Program (MMTP), and the Senior Lead and Founder of the Dal MedX Interest Group.
Before medicine, she worked in military space operations and has an academic background in physics and space engineering. She has also been involved in pre-hospital care and holds a United States Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Outside of school, you’ll usually find her trail running with her dog or training with Halifax Search & Rescue. She is also a skydiving coach and a competitive obstacle course racing athlete.
Jessie has always been drawn to environments where things don’t go as planned, where you must think on your feet and make decisions with limited resources. That’s what led her to create MedX: a space to explore medicine beyond the hospital, from wilderness and SAR to aerospace and disaster response.
Her Research in Medicine (RIM) focuses on space medicine, and she especially interested in how we adapt care to extreme environments and push human performance in those settings. For her, MedX is about bringing that mindset into medical training and connecting people who are curious about these non-traditional paths.
Cape Breton Jr Lead
Angus began falling in love with medicine in some unconventional places — during his time serving as a medic in the Canadian Armed Forces. Over more than a decade in uniform, he gained diverse experience providing embedded medical coverage during mountain operations, teaching new medics emergency pre‑hospital care, supporting aeromedical operations, and responding to natural disasters, including emergency relief efforts following Hurricane Dorian’s impact on Cape Breton in 2019.
Now a student at Dal Med Cape Breton, Angus is particularly drawn to medicine outside of the clinic. He has a strong interest in working complex and resource-limited environments, where timely clinical decision‑making, adaptability, and teamwork are critical. Through his involvement with this interest group, he hopes to share his enthusiasm for practicing medicine in unconventional settings, and to inspire others to explore non‑traditional clinical environments.
Outside of medical school, Angus can usually be found exploring Nova Scotia with his family, staying active in whatever form the day allows, and decompressing outdoors. He values balance, curiosity, and time away from the classroom, all of which help shape how he approaches medicine.
