Alan served as CAWA President from 2017 to 2023, overseeing a notable rise in chess participation, especially at the junior level. Under his leadership, the Schools Chess League (SCL) was initiated in 2017, becoming a key fixture in the WA Junior Chess calendar.
As a junior coach, Alan founded the Dalkeith Junior Chess Club in 2009 and continues to lead it today. He conducted coaching sessions at various schools and libraries and participated as a coach in chess camps.
Alan actively organised and participated in over 30 CAWA tournaments, including the SCL, State Junior championships, and two Junior chess camps in 2020 and 2021.
Dedicated to promoting chess regionally, Alan also supported the establishment of chess clubs in Albany, Bridgetown, and Bunbury.
Alan was honoured with Life Membership of the CAWA in 2023 for his exemplary service as President and significant contributions to Chess in Western Australia.
Alan's collaborative leadership approach, along with his team of volunteers, sparked a resurgence of interest in chess, particularly among juniors. Even as a council member of CAWA, he remains actively involved, providing support and organisational skills for various Junior and Adult tournaments, and running his Junior Chess Club at Dalkeith.
Kobe ventured into the world of chess at DJCC when she was seven, quickly excelling under the guidance of Alan and Wendy, securing several state and national girl champion titles. Despite lacking prior chess knowledge or a background at home, she thrived. The club's supportive atmosphere allowed her to focus on enjoying the process rather than fixating on results during games, fostering a resilient and pressure-free mindset.
Reflecting on the support she received, Kobe returned as a coach in 2023 when Alan sought assistance, aiming to uphold the club's positive impact on young players. In 2024, she leveraged her IT skills to establish the club's first website, streamlining club meetings and reducing redundant tasks.
Recognising the significance of intelligence in today's AI era, Kobe believes chess not only enhances cognitive skills and promotes memory improvement but also contributes to stress management. Through her efforts, she aspires to nurture intellectually adept future leaders.
