Daily Campfire Reviews is an independent website run by Danonn Mwangi and Brooke Lovell for the review and critique of the many different theater productions and other events put on by Blue Valley High School. Started by David Edwards in 2022, the blog features regular reviews of the shows that theater department puts out, as well as a Weird Articles section for off-topic information and an official ranking of the current year's shows.
We have no affiliation with Blue Valley High School's drama program, newspaper, or Tiger TV. Every Daily Campfire writer does go to the school, and some may be in the theater program.
The Edwards era began in early 2022. David Edwards was a sophomore at the time, and shortly before that year's production of The Love of Three Oranges, he realized he had seen all of the theater shows that year so far, and os on his phone created an informal ranking. When this got out, Edwards decided to start a blog to review the shows, an idea that was well-received by the theater community. Repurposing the domain dailycampfire.org from a summer camp newspaper he had run a few year before, Edwards founded Daily Campfire reviews on May 4, 2022, and published his first show review, that of Frannie Minkman's Exquisite Bat Mitzvah two days later.Â
For the next two years, Edwards pioneered the early traditions of Daily Campfire Reviews. The first Best Performance was given to Hadley Way for Anastasia; the 2022 - 2023 grand ranking featured the first few caption awards for the year, as well as the blog's first "Until Next Time" and its first use of "go thank a crew member", both staples of the Edwards era.
Outside of the blog, David Edwards was a trombonist in the band and a baritone player in the marching band; he was also a cross country runner and a film buff with a love of DC comics and King Arthur. He was also a member of the Horticulture Management Club. Edwards won Sweetheart King his senior year after a vigorous campaign and received a cameo appearance in his senior year's final Friday Night Live.
During the spring of his Senior year, Edwards selected Dannon Mwangi, Brooke Lovell, and Amelia Hooper as his successors, after previously having worked with Mwangi on his review of the interactive play Fated. After high school, David went to the University of Tulsa to study Electrical Engineering.
