Having students understand what service means and how to do that for others, will allow them to do more of that. Especially when it is helping out their community and giving back to those who are young. However, this starts with teachers who are willing to come together and organize this event with other schools, which takes time and planning.
This day that was planned for the whole school is called, "Service Learning Day", this is where the school does different activities that would benefit the community around us. My classroom's job was for my students to go to one of the elementary schools in the area to read to the children and play games with them. The artifacts below are pictures of my student interacting with the younger students from pre-k to 5th graders. This demonstrates indicator 8J, which states, "Works with all school personnel (e.g., support staff, teachers, paraprofessionals) to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals." This helps students be able to recognize how easy it is to get involved with others, and how reading a book will make those younger students amazed.
Also, this helps students explore what other options they can get involved in around the community. This demonstrates indicator 8T, which states, "Identifies and utilizes community resources to enhance student learning and to provide opportunities for students to explore career opportunities." Students who are exposed to different ways they can give back will be inspired by what other options are out there. Having these events benefits the students to give back to their community, even if they are this age.
