In the first hour, we explored various types of negotiation and emphasised the role of resilience as a crucial factor in effective communication. Resilience, in this context, refers to the ability to approach a topic or idea from multiple angles or points of view, which is essential for constructive communication and problem-solving.
We analysed the three key negotiation outcomes:
Win-Win
A collaborative approach where all parties benefit. This is the ideal outcome in most scenarios, as it promotes mutual respect, trust, and long-term cooperation.
Win-Lose
A competitive approach where one party benefits at the expense of the other. While this might bring short-term gains, it often leads to resentment or conflict in the long run.
Lose-Lose
A destructive approach where neither party benefits. This usually arises from poor communication, rigid mindsets, or an unwillingness to compromise.
The importance of reframing was reiterated.
Reframing is the ability to shift one’s perspective to better understand or resolve a conflict.
We also revisited logical reasoning and logical fallacies, highlighting how critical thinking can prevent communication breakdowns and manipulation. Understanding common fallacies strengthens our ability to argue effectively and evaluate others’ arguments objectively.
Communication is not just what happens on the surface but what happens beneath the surface.
What is NOT SAID is more important than what is being said!
