August 2026: NEW REVIEW PUBLICATION IN THE PLANT JOURNAL!
Our latest review paper on Phycobilisomes is now out in The Plant Journal! We explore how these ancient, modular light-harvesting systems capture light, transfer energy, and adapt, and what cryo-EM reveals about their potential for biotechnology.

Big news from our undergrads! Paco and Antonio were chosen as two of only 50 students nationwide to participate in the prestigious SEBBM Curso de Iniciación a la Investigación in Tarragona. Huge congratulations, guys!
May 2026: C5 MEETING IN WAGENINGEN!
Great progress and even better discussions! Our team was in the Netherlands this month for the latest C5 consortium meeting at Wageningen University. We spent two days reviewing project milestones, visiting the AlgaePARC pilot facilities, and planning our next steps in cyanobacterial engineering.

February 2026: Our first postdoc joined the lab!
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Natalie Kellogg as our very first postdoctoral researcher!
Fresh off her PhD at the University of Washington (supervised by Dr. Gabrielle Rocap), Natalie is joining us to work on the C5 project and light-harvesting topics.

January 2026: CYANOLIGHT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHERS AWARDED UCO RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS!
Team members Paco and Antonio were each awarded the Beca Semillero de Investigación fellowship by the University of Córdoba (UCO). This competitive institutional grant supports top-performing undergraduate students pursuing research initiatives. We congratulate both recipients on securing this funding to support their ongoing scientific training at CYANOLIGHT.

November 2025: C5 KOM in Córdoba!
We officially launched our C5 project with a fantastic Kick-Off Meeting (KOM) right here in Córdoba! It was an incredible gathering filled with energy, inspiring discussions, and a shared vision for the research ahead.

August 2025: EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER SYMPOSIUM ON CYANOBACTERIA (CYANOVAAM 2025)!
Our PhD students had a standout showing at CyanoVAAM 2025! Both Claudia and Teresa presented poster communications detailing their ongoing doctoral research, sharing their work with the international cyanobacteria community.
A special shoutout to Teresa, who was selected for an oral presentation! She delivered a brilliant talk on her latest results regarding light harvesting and photoprotection in marine cyanobacteria.

Attending ICTPPO 2025 was an absolute highlight for our team this year! We were deeply involved across the entire event:
Claudia & Teresa represented our lab at the poster sessions, Tina had the privilege of giving a talk on our team´s recent results, and she was honored to serve on the organizing committee and chair several fascinating sessions!

July 2025: PROJECT FUNDED BY THE SPANISH RESEARCH AGENCY (AEI)!
We are thrilled to announce that our project CYANO-PHOTO-RELAX has been officially awarded funding. This grant will allow us to delve deeper into the molecular mechanisms of photoprotection and energy relaxation in cyanobacteria.

We had the absolute honor of hosting Prof. Eva Nogales (UC Berkeley) at the University of Córdoba!
She delivered an inspiring seminar as part of the UCOBRSeminars series, sharing her world-leading expertise in cryo-EM and macromolecular assemblies with our community. It was an inspiring day of discussions and science.

We returned to the European XFEL for an exciting PCS beamtime experiment!
Teresa represented the CYANOLIGHT team, working closely alongside our collaborators Isabel and Robin. A big thank you to the EuXFEL staff and our amazing collaborators for such a smooth and successful beamtime!

In March 2025, Nicole visited the CYANOLIGHT lab as part of our ongoing collaboration with RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau.
During her visit, Nicole gave a seminar to the team, and we had the opportunity to discuss our research, exchange ideas, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

September 2024: EUROPEAN CYANOBACTERIA WORKSHOP (SEVILLE)
We attended the European Cyanobacteria Workshop in Seville! It was a fantastic meeting spent connecting with friends and colleagues, and our PhD students did a great job presenting their posters.

April 2024: A HIGH-RESOLUTION STRUCTURE OF THE AMAZING PHYCOBILISOME IS OUT!
We are excited to share our new collaborative work, published in Science Advances! In this study, we investigated how the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) protects cyanobacteria from excess light by promoting the dissipation of excess excitation energy. This work brought together researchers from several international institutions, combining cryo-electron microscopy and quantum chemical approaches to uncover the structural and mechanistic basis of OCP-mediated photoprotection.
March 2024: OUR FIRST GRAPHICAL REVIEW!
We are excited to share our first graphical review, published in Current Research in Structural Biology! “Structure and function of the light-protective orange carotenoid protein families” reviews the latest advances in our understanding of Orange Carotenoid Proteins (OCPs) and their role in protecting cyanobacteria from excess light.

March 2024: BEAMTIME EXPERIMENT AT EuXFEL
We have participated in beamtime experiments at the European XFEL (EuXFEL) together with our collaborators Dr. Patrick Konold and Prof. Filipe Maia from Uppsala University.
2023: CYANOLIGHT GOES BOWLING! 🎳
We took a break from the lab for our first CYANOLIGHT bowling activity! It was a great opportunity to spend some time together outside the lab!
2023: OUR FIRST STUDENTS JOIN CYANOLIGHT!
CYANOLIGHT welcomed its first students and trainees, marking an exciting milestone in the growth of our research group. We welcomed Paul from France as our first international student, Victoria, who joined us as a laboratory training student, and Teresa M. García-Oneto, who joined the lab to carry out her Bachelor's thesis (TFG).
This marked the beginning of a new chapter for CYANOLIGHT, as our team started to grow and welcome students at different stages of their scientific training.
