In the graphic arts, there are certain rules and principles that encapsulate the definition of quality design. Through the many different rules, such as visuals, rhythm, repetition, and space, artists and designers can utilize them to make a persuasive and impactful piece of media. With visuals, we can make the media pop and stand out. Colors, the font and typography used, and resolution all come together to build a hierarchy of design. With visuals, artists can take full advantage of using rhythm and repetition to show relationships between the design and message. Rhythm and repetition help create a digestible piece, allowing the audience to follow the latest information easily. This goes hand in hand with how graphic illustrators and designers use spacing. Something that many may not realize is how important spacing our messaging and graphics can be. If too close, a piece may look claustrophobic, and if spread too far apart, it will not engage the audience.
There are three principles: visuals, rhythm and repetition, and space, all of which go in tandem with creating websites, applications, and more. The applications and websites we use daily use these design hierarchies to keep their audiences engaged with whatever service or message they are trying to deliver. However, those who design said websites and applications have their own basic design principles they must follow. Navigation and interactivity are paramount for building a digital platform. A good balance of navigation and interaction leaves the audience coming back to whatever message they are trying to deliver. With lackluster navigation and interactivity, it can make the audience frustrated or confused as to why an application or website is designed the way it is. Artists, businesses, and individuals can create their own digital platform. However, to succeed, they must respect these basic design principles.
Without following the principles of design, your messaging can look messy and sloppy. To illustrate everything, I decided to use Canva as a tool to represent the different principles. I believed making a pattern to describe my messaging and using notes would emphasize my statement. To add some flare, I added pin-tacs to make it feel as if this would be seen on a bulletin board at an office. Moreover, I added images that corresponded with each statement to illustrate how impactful each design principle is.
Google Drive is one of the best services they have ever realized. I wanted to highlight how impactful Google Drive is since I use it on an almost daily basis. Hence, I created this graphic design to illustrate what the application is, the pros and cons, and where it can be used. I wanted to mimic the style Google's artists use across their applications, so I used similar fonts and coloring to match. First off, I thought. It was important to create a segment on "What is Google Drive?". What influenced me to choose this is how my own mother struggles with understanding cloud storage web applications like Google Drive and Dropbox. It can be complex to look at Google Drive for the first time without knowing what the application does. Therefore, I created a three-bullet-pointed list describing what the application is and what it does to help alleviate any confusion. Then I thought it was paramount to add the pros and cons since they get straight to the point without fluffing up any information. In a list form to show the many use cases with the least number of words possible, highlight different crucial factors when using the web application. After that, I thought the most crucial factor to help describe the functionality of Google Drive was to show how different individuals may use the same application. Educators and students can store any important class files and papers and access them from multiple devices. Meanwhile, businesses may use the application to share important data across multiple accounts. Google Drive is more of a web tool than an application. There are so many use cases for storing files that it is a necessity with how much digital content we store online.
