Overview

The CUNY DRP is an opportunity for graduate students to mentor CUNY undergraduates in a semester-long independent study project.  As a mentor, you will propose at least one project in a topic of your choice. We encourage you to propose a variety of projects, suitable for a range of mathematical backgrounds — from students who have only completed a calculus sequence to students who are ready for graduate level coursework. See the application form for further details regarding project proposals.

Before the program starts, you will be matched with a student based on the best fit in terms of interests and background level. You will be responsible for meeting with your student on a weekly basis. At the end of the semester, the student is expected to give a brief talk on what they have learned.

If you have not heard of a directed reading program before, you may be interested to read about the many DRP predecessors from various institutions.

FAQ

How do I pick suitable reading projects?

In the mentor application, you can propose multiple reading projects for students to select from. See Past Semesters for lists of projects proposed by CUNY DRP mentors from previous years.  See the UCSB DRP page for a large list of examples. For text suggestions, see the AMS student library or Brown University's DRP library. During the first meeting with your student, you will jointly decide on a reading project for the term. The project that is ultimately chosen does not have to be one of the projects that you proposed in your application. However, the topic should align with the student's interests as well as your expertise, as much as possible.

How long is the program?

The program is will run from February to May.

What's expected of me as a mentor?

Your job is to provide a structured environment for the student to learn. You will be overseeing various aspects of the project, making sure that the student knows what is expected and has the resources they need. Plan to meet with the student for around 1 hour each week. Towards the end of the program, you will help the student prepare for their final presentation.

Can I make any additional suggestions?

Yes! Feel free to share your suggestions to cunydrp@gmail.com or to fill in the comment box at the end of the mentor application.

Who is eligible to be a mentor?

Any CUNY graduate student is eligible!  Graduate students from other universities are also welcome to apply.

Who am I mentoring?

All CUNY undergraduate students and master's students are eligible to apply to be a student for your project.  Before the program starts, you will be matched with students based on the best fit in terms of interests and background level.

When will I find out who I am mentoring?

Early-to-mid January.
