Mr. Wayne Fox was promoted to Honorary Shodan on November 8, 2016. Mr Fox has been a diligent student whose life truly reflects the One Heart of Isshinryu karate. Due to a variety of health issues, Mr. Fox is unable to maintain a regular training schedule, but his heart is always in the dojo. Congratulations, Mr. Fox!

Heather Batchelor Mitchell, of Tarboro passed away Friday.
Heather is survived by her husband, Dallas Mitchell and her son, Tyler Mitchell; her parents, Ray and Deborah Batchelor; her brother, Jeffery Batchelor and her grandparents, Arthur and Jean Batchelor.

RIVER BEND - Ryland E. Matthews, Jr., 57, of River Bend, passed away April 16, 2017.
He served 16 years in the Marine Corps and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Ryland was a Lieutenant with the New Bern Police Department and served five years as Chief of Police in River Bend.
He was a third degree black belt and the owner and Sensei of New Bern Karate.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Matthews, two sons, Ryland E. Matthews III, and wife Kristen of Jacksonville, NC, Jeffrey Matthews of Columbus, Mississippi, two daughters, Brandy Vanhorn of Newport, Amanda Heath of Leland, and one grandson, Ryland E. Matthews IV.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ryland E. Matthews and Wanda Cardullo.
