The Cultural Foundation Felis Catus supports the Japan Tour of Duo Atzuko Kohashi and Tony Overwater with Sebastiaan Kaptein as a guest performer scheduled in June 2024. 

The Amsterdam-based duo of Japanese pianist Atzko Kohashi and Dutch bassist Tony Overwater pursues chamber jazz that embraces their multicultural musical backgrounds. Sharing traditional jazz as their common ground, they welcome each other's voices, be it the resonance of Japanese harmony or the inspiration from Arabic music. 

During the pandemic, they recorded the album Crescent, reinterpreting John Coltrane's legendary works, which received nominations for the Edison Jazz Award for 2022 and the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik Prize. Their latest work, A Drum Thing (Challenge Records, 2023), explores compositions by drummers to achieve a strong rhythm and melodic components.

The Japan tour in Trio with Okinawa-based Dutch drummer Sebastiaan Kaptein will provide unique opportunities to develop further their musical engagements through live concerts and a workshop.

Since 2014, M. Yasunaga, founder & director of the Culturele Stichting Felis Catus, has been working as manager of Japanese alt saxophonist/composer Genzo Okabe and his jazz quartet Okabe Family. A remarkable feature of this musical project is its multicultural scope. This does not only mean that it consists of musicians from Japan, Italy, Spain and Canada all of whom studied at conservatories in the Netherlands; Okabe takes in various musical elements from the tradition of African music to sounds of Japanese folklore music in order to produce a new, unique artistic form of expression. 

One of our many goals is to earn them international recognition, a result of which was their appearance in Germany in 2016. Currently we are working together for the project "Okabe Family Tour in Japan" which will take place in numerous cities in Japan from October 12 - 22, 2017. In addition to concerts at leading venues in Japanese music scene, we are also organizing a charity concert in Hitachi, one of the many cities affected by the devastating Tsunami and Earthquake in 2011, to invite local high school students.  

Culturele Stichting Felis Catus will continue to support the project Okabe Family, to disseminate the idea of multicultural identity as creative force.   

Project 

Het project “Okabe Family by Genzo Okabe Tour ‘Disoriental’ in Japan” heeft al doel om in Japan een grotere bekendheid en zichtbaarheid te geven aan de composities en uitvoeringen van Genzo Okabe. De tournee gaat niet alleen naar Tokyo en omstreken maar reikt tot Hitachi, Nagoya, Osaka en Kyoto. 

Okabe Family is een akoestisch jazz kwartet dat in 2009 is opgericht door de Japanse alt saxofonist Genzo Okabe. Hij werkt met multicultureel talenten die allen hebben gestudeerd aan conservatoria in Nederland, te weten: Miguel Rodriguez (piano), Steven Willem Zwanink (contrabas), Francesco de Rubeis (drums).

In 2017 is het ensemble door de Nederlandse jazzpodia geselecteerd gekozen tot ‘Young Jazz Talent’ (Young VIPs). De optredens en hun derde album “Disoriental”, waarvan alle stukken door Okabe zelf zijn geschreven, zijn zeer positief ontvangen. Ook is de ambitie waarbinnen nieuwe vormen van expressie in combinatie met verschillende sounds (Aziatisch, Afrikaans, Westers) en jazz samengaan, is herkend en zeer gewaardeerd. 

In Japan groeit de waardering en belangstelling voor de muziek van Okabe Family snel. Zo zijn er al talloze positieve recensies en artikelen geschreven in verschillende muziek media en journals. Het is immers voor een Japanse jazz artiest in het buitenland vrij bijzonder om buiten Japan al zoveel te hebben bereikt. Ondanks de positieve berichtgeving is het de band echter nog niet gelukt om het publiek in Japan te bereiken met live optredens. De groep hoopt met deze tournee op deze groeiende behoefte in te kunnen spelen door middel van een aantal live concerten met een goede spreiding. 

De optredens zullen ongetwijfeld een grote impact hebben op de jazz scene in Japan. Niet alleen zal het project laten zien hoeveel kwaliteit er in de uitvoering zit, maar het geeft ook een mooie inkijk in de ontwikkelingen in de Nederlandse jazz muziek en de wijze waarop er gespeeld wordt op de Nederlandse podia. 

Hierbij benadrukken we het multiculturele karakter en de diversiteit in de band, het levende bewijs van de rijkdom en open sfeer in de Nederlandse muziek scene, de educatie en de open mentaliteit in de open Nederlandse samenleving.
