Good morning class! Today we are starting our football unit specifically our American football unit. Before we jump into any of the fun activities have planned let's go over the main topic of our unit gender diversity in sports. American Football has been around since 1869 but it was not until over a century later that women began to play. There have been multiple examples of women in the sport in recent memory. The most popular example is Sarah Fuller the first woman to play college football in a Power Five conference. This explosion of women in sports has caused many states to begin having flag football for girls as an official school-sponsored sport. All of this culminated in flag football becoming a sport in the 2028 Olympics that takes place in Los Angeles which shows just how impactful the sport is in our culture.
Warm-up 5 mins:
Instructions: Students will partner up and take turns throwing the ball to one another while music is playing. As you become more comfortable take steps back while still maintaining consistent accuracy with your passes.
Modifications for students who need challenge: Students will stand further back making their passes more difficult.
Modifications for students who need support: Students will be able to stand closer to their partner to make the passes easier.
Teacher Responsibilities:
Play and queue up songs for the students
I will keep my back to the wall to maximize supervision and safety.
Activity 20 mins:
Students will be split into one of two groups one on each half of the gym. There is one defender one receiver and one passer. The rest of the students will be waiting on the side for their turn. They are doing receiver one-on-ones where the receiver is trying to get open and the passer is trying to throw them the ball. After the rep, the passer goes to defense, the defender goes to receive, and the receiver goes to the back of their line. This allows for the next player in line to be the passer.
Essential Questions:
What is the desired type of pass when throwing a football?
Spiral
What shape are your hands supposed to be when catching a football?
Diamond
Modifications for students who need challenge: Students who need a challenge will be given a specific route and they will be required to get open on that route.
Modifications for students who need support: They are allowed to run around wherever they want to get open.
Teacher Responsibilities:
Give routes when needed
Keeping the language kind and respectful
Back to a wall to monitor students
Cool Down:
Instructions: Students will do a long throw toss to see how far they can throw the ball the farthest throw with their non-dominant hand wins
Modifications for students who need challenge: The can also throw behind their back
Modifications for students who need support: They can throw with their dominant hand
Teacher Responsibilities:
Judge the distance on the throws
I will keep my back to the wall to maximize supervision and safety.
