Attention Getter:
Hello class! Today we are going to practice demonstrating the correct skill sequences of passing, trapping, and dribbling a soccer ball with our peers in the activity. Before we jump into our activities we are going to touch on our unit's theme of gender diversity in sports around the world. Soccer is very popular in many countries among both females and males. In Germany, women's soccer is gaining a lot of popularity since the early 1990's and is also very popular among both groups. At a professional level, women's soccer in Germany has won multiple UEFA Women's European Championships. Due to the growth of popularity among this woman in Germany, this has impacted the acceptance of women athletes and recognition at a national level. This has also helped Germany with gender equality and opportunities for women in Germany. With this in mind today, we will begin class with our dribbling warm-up, move into our practice activities, cool down our bodies with a reflection activity, and gather back here for our closure.
Warm-up: 5 Minutes
Instructions: Students will all grab a soccer ball and begin dribbling around the perimeter of the gym. When the song changes, the students will listen for my command indicating for them to either increase or decrease speed.
Modifications for students who need challenge: Students can go fast when increase of speed is indicated.
Modifications for students who need support: Students can maintain a slower pace to keep control of the ball when increase of speed is indicated.
Teacher Responsibilities:
I will clearly indicate slow down and decrease instructions during the activity.
I will keep my back to the wall to maximize supervision and safety.
Activity: 20 Minutes
Instructions for the first 10 minutes: Gym will be set up with domes in 4 square formations, each cone 5 feet apart. Students will be assigned to groups of 4 students and each student will stand at a dome in the square. Students will use the skill sequences of trapping and passing during the activity to pass to their peers around the square. When students are receiving a pass from another student in their square they are expected to demonstrate the correct skill sequence of trapping. When you are passing to another peer in your square you will say the name of the student you are passing to. You may pass the ball across the side of the square or diagonally.
Next 10 minutes: Two students will begin with the soccer ball and attempt to keep it away from the other two students. Students on offense will use the skill sequences of dribbling, passing, and trapping with their peers to begin to move the ball away from the defenders. Defenders will attempt to steal the ball from the offense. Students of offense are only allowed to dribble to ball for 3 seconds before having to pass the ball to their teammate. Once a defender has stolen the ball from the students on offense, that student and their partner become offense while the previous students on offense become defense.
Essential Questions:
What part of the foot do you want to strike the ball with when passing?
The upper inside part of the foot.
Where should we trap the ball in relation to the body?
Slightly in front of the body.
Modifications for students who need challenge: Students can pass the ball diagonally in the square to demonstrate a farther pass.
Modifications for students who need support: Students can pass the ball to the student next to them in the square to make the distance shorter.
Teacher Responsibilities:
I will walk around and provide a variety of feedback to the students during the activity.
I will keep my back to the wall to maximize supervision and safety.
Cool Down:
Instructions: Students will stay in their square and each student will take a seat at their dome. The students will roll the ball to each other and each student will share something they learned about gender and cultural diversity in soccer.
Modifications for students who need challenge: Students can ask peers for support if they can't think of anything to share.
Modifications for students who need support: Students can assist peers or go into depth about what they learned.
Teacher Responsibilities:
I will clearly indicate slow down and decrease instructions during the activity.
I will keep my back to the wall to maximize supervision and safety.
