New! Apply for the 2024 Psychiatry Undergraduate Research Program and Learning Experience (PURPLE)

Added 2/6/2024

New! Apply for the 2024 Psychiatry Undergraduate Research Program and Learning Experience (PURPLE)

The 2024 Psychiatry Undergraduate Research Program and Learning Experience (PURPLE) is designed to introduce undergraduates to a variety of careers in psychology and psychiatry through participation in mentored research activities with faculty members from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Applicants will have the opportunity to learn about the CU Department of Psychiatry’s research mission: to promote brain health for all, for life.

This year’s program will be held with a hybrid model (some in-person work and some online) and may be held completely digitally depending on evolving institutional guidelines. The program will run from May 20th to August 13th, 2024. An outline of the research activities is listed on page four.

This year, the PURPLE Program and the Avielle Foundation will be collaborating to support one student and mentor pair who embody their mission to enhance brain research and increase compassion. The student will have the opportunity to travel to a conference to present their work. More information will be made available soon.

Specifically, PURPLE seeks to:

1.Provide undergraduates with basic research skills

2.Introduce undergraduates to careers in behavioral health, psychiatry, and psychology

3.Give undergraduates the tools to successfully apply to graduate school and/or job opportunities

Program Overview: During the program, each student is paired with a faculty mentor (and the mentor’s research team) to complete a research project (refer to pages 6-14 for faculty mentor profiles). Students are expected to commit approximately 25 hours per week to the research program. Work schedules are flexible and will be arranged in advance with faculty mentors. However, students are still expected to be physically present during in-person didactics and digitally present (e.g., attending digital meetings, completing work via computer, participating in digital class sessions, etc.) for 25 hours per week during the 12-week program. Upon completion of the research program, students are required to formally present their work to the department and their peers in the form of oral and poster presentations given digitally. This year’s program will be hybrid and will become virtual as needed depending on changing guidelines. All accepted students from 2024 will receive the same rigorous, fun, and meaningful experience for which PURPLE is known!

Please note that based on feedback from previous cohorts, this is an intensive program requiring a significant time commitment. The digital program will be no exception. If selected, students should plan their other summer commitments accordingly.

Applicant Eligibility: This year, we are recruiting eight highly qualified undergraduate students for the 12-week program. Competitive applicants will: A) Have a cumulative college GPAof >3.0; B) have taken at least one college statistics course; and C) show a demonstrated interest in pursuing graduate school or careers related to behavioral health, psychiatry, or psychology. If you do not meet the listed requirements, you are still welcome to apply. We examine student profiles holistically, taking into consideration student hardship, demonstrated strengths outside of college, and overall potential. However, given the large number of applicants we receive each year, these requirements are usually the bare minimum qualifications we see from accepted students to our program.

Applicants are subject to complete a required toxicology test and pass a background check upon hiring. This will be paid for by the PURPLE program. Students are also required to provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or must file for an exemption.

Student Stipend: A stipend of $3,720 will be provided to each selected student. Although the program will be partially digital, it is expected that transportation, housing, and living expenses are paid for by students and are thus not included in the stipend amount. Selected students must make their own transportation and living arrangements prior to the start of the summer research program.

The application deadline is Wednesday March 13th, 2024 by midnight (MST). Submissions received after this deadline will not be accepted. It is your responsibility to ensure that your recommendation letter(s) are turned in to the appropriate e-mail by the March 13th deadline, along with your application materials. See page three for application details.

Please see here for more details:

New! Cincinnati Children's Hospital 2024 Summer Treatment Program seeks counselors

Added 2/2/2024

New! Cincinnati Children's Hospital 2024 Summer Treatment Program seeks counselors

Cincinnati Children's Hospital 2024 Summer Treatment Program

Counselors Needed for Summer Treatment Program for Children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is looking to recruit counselors for the ADHD Summer Treatment Program (STP). This an all-day, evidence-based, therapeutic program devoted exclusively to 6-12- year-old children with ADHD following the Summer Treatment Program model developed by Dr. William Pelham. The STP is located in Cincinnati, Ohio and is directed by Dr. Kelli Lupas. The STP provides intensive weekday treatment tailored to children’s behavioral and educational needs. During the program, children are placed in age-similar groups of 10-15 children and are supervised by five-six counselors (and one lead counselor per group). Approximately 2 hours a day are devoted to classroom intervention. During this time, children are supervised by counselors in a structured setting with a response cost system in place. Children spend the remainder of the day in recreational activities during which the counselors implement a comprehensive behavior modification system. Treatment components include a point system, response cost, time out, group problem-solving, social skills training, sports skills training, as well as other strategies.

Recreational Counselors

These staff members are typically undergraduate students majoring in psychology, education, pre-med, or related fields. Counselors implement the treatment program with their group of 10-15 children and track daily progress for 1-4 children within their group. Counselors implement behavior modification interventions during activities and conduct sports skills training, social skills training, and problem-solving training. During classroom sessions, recreational counselors serve in supportive roles, plan activities, design and revise individualized programs and targets for children's daily report cards, and meet individually or as a group for supervision.

Educational Counselors

Educational counselors are typically undergraduate and graduate students in education, psychology, or other related fields. Educational counselors facilitate the Academic Learning Center, where children complete seatwork based on their individual skill level, and partner activities. Educational counselors ensure that each child receives work that is appropriate for their academic level. Educational counselors also grade and track classroom and homework assignments. Educational counselors may also plan activities for and supervise children during the computer and art learning centers. Educational counselors are responsible for implementing a response cost behavior management system in these settings.

Lead Counselors

These staff members are typically individuals with significant experience at a Summer Treatment Program or graduate level training. In addition to implementing the program, they supervise 4-6 undergraduate counselors in implementing the treatment program. During staff training, they assist program staff members in training the counselors in the token economy/point system, time out procedures, social skills and problem-solving training procedures, and review the clinical records of the children with whom they will be working during the STP.

Coordinators

These staff members typically have multiple years of experience at a Summer Treatment Program or graduate level training. Primary responsibilities involve observing STP activities, completing treatment integrity and fidelity forms, and providing performance feedback to counselors. Coordinators are also responsible for helping to plan and coordinate Fun Friday activities and managing the logistics of various aspects of program implementation.

These positions provide students with a valuable opportunity to receive training and receive approximately 250 hours of face-to-face clinical experience working with children with ADHD and related behavior problems.

• Excellent opportunity for graduate school and work recommendations

• Gain clinical experience with children with ADHD and behavioral concerns

• Learn and use behavioral treatment strategies

Counselors are required to complete 2 weeks of training with our clinical staff before the start of the program. Training will begin on May 27th at our Center for ADHD. During training counselors typically work between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. During the program counselors typically work between 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday and between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM Friday. The hours will likely vary slightly as needed. The summer program will begin on June 10th and will run on weekdays through July 26th, 2024. There will be no program on June 19th or July 4th. Counselors will also work after the program ends, from July 29th – July 31st to write reports summarizing the progress of 2-4 children.

We are seeking fun, intelligent, professional, and nurturing individuals with:

• Strong interpersonal skills

• Experience working with children; ability to be playful

• Capability to react quickly and to deal with stressful situations

• High level of motivation, enthusiasm and energy!

• Sports skills and knowledge (softball, soccer, basketball, or kickball)

• Eagerness to learn; ability to accept and utilize constructive feedback

• Excellent academic skills, preferably in related areas (e.g., psychology, education, pre-med)

COVID-19 vaccination is required of all Cincinnati Children’s employees, contractors, volunteers, vendors, and students who work onsite at any of the medical center’s facilities.

Applications will be available on our website: www.cincinnatichildrens.org/stp Please email ADHDSTP@cchmc.org or call 513-803-7708 with questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect to make working for the STP?

· We anticipate staff will be paid an hourly rate of $13.00. Taking into consideration typical hours from past years, we estimate that the amount of money counselors will make over the summer will be around $5,150 before taxes.

Do you offer housing?

· We do not have the ability to provide living accommodations for the summer; however, we provide multiple resources to counselors for finding housing for the summer. We typically hire several counselors from outside the Cincinnati area, and we connect all of the counselors at the time of hiring. Our returning counselors often provide suggestions for living options and many of our counselors will work together to find shared accommodations to reduce cost.

Are there any short-term positions available?

· Unfortunately, given the time intensive nature of our training and program, the positions are not available as short-term or part-time. It would have be a commitment for the full summer.

Can I take time off during the summer?

· Our counselors are an integral part of our program and are expected to work the full hours daily each week. Given the intensive nature of the intervention, this is a full-time position that does not include paid time off or vacation pay, and does not include remote or part-time work options. The hours are typically 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Fridays. We would not recommend applying if you will be gone for one week of the program, but encourage you to apply next year.

Do you have to be an undergraduate to apply?

· Nope! We have hired counselors from all undergraduate levels (freshman through senior), as well as recent grads and early graduate students.

What if I’m an international student or non-citizen?

· You do not have to be a US citizen to apply, but for Children’s Hospital employment you have to have US work authorization.

New! Summer positions with the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University

The Center for Children and Families at Florida International University announces Summer Treatment Program Counselor, Research Assistant, and Teacher/Classroom Aide positions for 2024. Positions are available at our sites in Miami and in Buffalo, NY. More than 100 positions are available. Positions are available for undergraduate students, postbaccalaureate students, and graduate students.

The Summer Treatment Program (STP) provides services to children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, learning problems, and related behavior problems. By participating in the STP, students will:

·        Learn evidence-based techniques for working with children who have disruptive behavior disorders

·        Gain valuable clinical and research experience to prepare for career and graduate school

·        Help children to improve their social skills, sports skills, and academic skills

·        Network with faculty members at the Center for Children and Families, as well as students from across the country.

Positions are available in programs serving children between the ages of 3-12. Children and counselors are assigned to groups of four or five counselors and 10 to 15 children of similar age. Children participate in a variety of classroom-based and recreational activities. Staff members implement an extensive behavior modification treatment program that includes feedback and associated consequences for positive and negative behaviors, daily and weekly rewards for appropriate behavior, social praise and attention, appropriate commands, and age-appropriate removal from positive reinforcement.

Counselors deliver the treatment components during daily sports-based recreational periods in which children practice and play soccer, baseball/softball, and basketball. Counselors plan and conduct skill drills, provide appropriate coaching, model appropriate sports skills, and encourage and reinforce effort, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork. Counselors also assist with daily social skills training sessions, conduct problem solving discussions, and assist with the implementation of daily report cards and individualized treatment programs. Staff members will also be responsible for recording and entering daily records of children’s behavior and response to the treatment. Staff members will work under the supervision of experienced faculty and staff members and will receive regular feedback about their performance.

Experience in the STP may be helpful to prepare students for further study or employment in the fields of education, mental health, physical education, pediatrics, psychiatry, recreational therapy, behavior analysis, social work, counseling, and related areas. Staff members have uniformly reported the experience to be the most demanding but also the most rewarding clinical experience of their careers.
