Interested in graduate school? Apply to be a McNair Scholar to help support your journey!

The University of Colorado Denver is one of a few universities nationwide selected to host the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, which is federally funded by the US Department of Education. Named after astronaut and Space Shuttle Challenger crew member, Ronald E. McNair, the program is designed to help students prepare for doctoral study through involvement in research and scholarly activities. One of the highlights of the program is the summer research internship for which a McNair Scholar receives a stipend to assist with living expenses while he or she is conducting research in partnership with a faculty mentor.

Some other benefits of the program include individualized academic and professional development training, academic coaching, tutoring, financial literacy workshops, graduate school visits, assistance in applying to graduate schools and finding funding for graduate education, career exploration and support to attend conferences to present your research.

To qualify for this program you must be:

• A first-generation college student (neither parent completed a Bachelor’s degree, or if you regularly resided with only one parent, he/she did not complete a Bachelor’s degree) and meet the low-income guidelines established by the US Department of Education.

 Or

• A member of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education: Black/African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.

In addition you must:

• Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident or can provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of intent to become a Permanent Resident.

• Be an undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program having completed at least 30 credit hours for Pre-McNair sophomores or 60 or more credits by the time of formal entry into the program. Students in a STEM discipline are given priority.

• Have at least a 2.80 Grade Point Average (for Pre-McNair students), or have a 3.00 or higher cumulative GPA (for McNair candidates).

• Be highly motivated to pursue an academic doctoral degree, such as a PhD.

Note: This program is not open to students intending to pursue professional degrees such as medicine, law or business.
