We are looking for 4-year-olds to take part in a short study at Cardiff University.
In this study, we want to find out more about how young children learn new words and signs. Your child and a researcher will play together with some toys at a tabletop, as well as playing a fun iPad game.
Your child will receive a certificate for helping science. We can also reimburse local travel expenses.
If you wish to take part: express your interest here, by scanning the QR code, or contact us at babylab-embodied@cardiff.ac.uk .
We are looking for children aged 4-8, along with their parents (two-parent and single parent families), to participate in fun and exciting research investigating how different kinds of play influences growing minds! Previous research has examined the benefits of play in terms of learning outcomes, but little research has addressed what is happening when children and their parents play with toys together.
Sessions will last around 90 minutes and will take place in our lab, OR, your own home - no need to travel, we can come to you! If you would like to participate in our study, we would provide you with dolls and magnetic tiles to play with. We ask that, where applicable, both parents are available to take part.
Children will receive a small prize with a certificate and parents will get a Love2Shop voucher as a thank you.

We are looking for young scientists to participate in a study that explores how children learn together with a partner. Previous research has shown that children learn better when they are completing a joint task with another person. In this study we will explore how the environment, memory errors, and emotions can affect how children learn together with a partner.
This study involves drawing and coding on a tablet together with a researcher and alone. There will also be some other fun problem-solving and memory games on a tablet and on paper, which will help us measure your child's executive function skills, such as short-term memory and attention, and their theory of mind skills which are skills related to social understanding of other people’s mental states. Children get a small prize and a certificate for taking part.

What does the study involve?
The memory game we have created will involve your child looking for a picture of toy among other toys on a computer screen, remembering the toy or its location and then answering questions about what they remember. For some questions your child will respond by touching the computer screen and for others your child will be asked to respond verbally; verbal responses will be recorded using a microphone. Whilst your child is completing the memory game, we will record their brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG).
The study will take approximately 2 hours to complete and will take place at a lab in CUCHDS at the School of Psychology, Cardiff University. There will be opportunities for breaks and a researcher will be present throughout the session. We will be measuring the electrical signals from the surface of your child’s scalp using non-invasive EEG. This involves wearing a cap with electrodes attached. The electrodes connect using a gel that can be washed off with water.
EEG is harmless and painless and carries no significant risk to participants, though some participants do report a brief itching sensation at the beginning of the recording. There is a low chance of mild skin irritation at some contact points between the electrodes and your child’s skin. There is potential discomfort if your child were to dislike wearing the EEG cap. The experimenter will monitor this during the experiment, and you and your child should also feel free to inform the experimenter if your child feels any discomfort or irritation.
Your child’s participation is voluntary, and we will not proceed with testing if they do not wish to take part. As a thank you for taking part, your child will receive a small prize like stickers and a small toy.

This is an exciting online study that you can take part in from the comfort and safety of your own home! In this study, we want to find out more about children’s perceptions and knowledge of the brain.
During the initial video chat, your child will take part in two surveys. We will ask questions on what they already know about the brain and brain related conditions as well as some general questions about scenarios. Then, we will send you a storybook to read once a week over the course of 2 weeks (we'll ask for your address to send the book directly to your house). We will call you back after the 2-week period is up and ask them more questions about what they have learned.
To thank you for your time, we will send you a book for each session you attend and your child will be given a certificate.
