The HIE-CONNECT study investigates the brain development of healthy babies in comparison to the brain development of babies who suffered a lack of oxygen around birth (hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, HIE). These babies are more likely to have learning and physical difficulties later in life.
We will measure your baby's brain activity simply by placing a soft cap, with sensors, on their head at 3 and 6 months of age.
Your contribution to the study would offer valuable information on brain development and contribute to improving the care of newborns following HIE.

We are looking for 3.5-4.5 month old's and their mothers to help us understand how attention biases towards emotion faces develop during the first two years of life.
We aim to explore whether child temperament (e.g. fussiness, cuddliness) and maternal influences (e.g., anxiety, expressions of affect) influence the development of these biases. We also want to look at how these factors may influence brain development of the regions associated with attention and emotion processes to help us best understand the development of attention biases towards emotion faces.
If you decide that you and your child would like to participate in our study, we will invite you to visit us when your child is approximately 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months old.
During each visit, we will ask you to fill out some questionnaires about yours' and your baby' mood and behaviours. Your baby will watch some pictures of facial expressions on a screen and we will see where your baby is looking using an eye-tracker. Visits also include measuring your baby's brain activity simply by placing a soft cap, with sensors, on their head.
As a thank you, babies will receive a small toy at each visit, and parents will receive up to £35.

0-2 years
1 hour phone call, home recordings
We’re looking for children under 2 to take part in a fully flexible and remote study exploring the everyday experiences of children from Welsh-English bilingual homes. This fun and engaging study investigates how early bilingual environments shape children’s development.
The study has two main parts, including a phone interview with a member of our team for some background information, and the home recordings. For the recordings, we will send you soft, lightweight headgear and cameras that your child can wear while playing at home. The entire session takes about one hour, and all the materials you’ll need will be delivered to your doorstep.
