The life and times of Community United Church of Christ, Raleigh NC
Community UCC is a Raleigh NC church affiliated with the United Church of Christ. It is located at 814 Dixie Trail at the intersection of Dixie Trail and Wade Avenue. The present congregation was formed by the merger of the United Church of Raleigh, situated in downtown Raleigh, and the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Raleigh which between 1956 and 1969 occupied the present church site.
The United Church of Christ (UCC) was formed in 1957 by the merger of several diverse denominations. Information about the UCC can be found at ucc.org.
Community UCC has a colorful history and a rich oral history. The purpose of this website is to capture as much of this color and history as possible and make it easily accessible to future generations.
The history of CUCC will continue. This project will not. The task of recording future ventures will fall to others. I have had the benefit of valuable interactions with some of the primary participants in the history of CUCC between 1970 and 2020. And very importantly, I have been able to take advantage of a substantial amount of historic memorabilia found deep in the bowels of Pilgrim House located beside the church. During the period 2010-2015 I scanned as much of this material as possible. Many of the old clippings were at that time already in an advanced state of disintegration.
I leave this project for those who love this church and its rich history. Most of the significant influencers in my life have been found in this congregation, and I leave these stories to honor them and inspire their descendants.
