The Educational Divide in Climate Change Attitudes: A New Perspective on Scientific Knowledge and Social Status

In a groundbreaking study published in Global Environmental Change by Anne G. Hoekstra, Kjell Noordzij, Willem de Koster, and Jeroen van der Waal (2025), researchers have shed light on the educational divide in climate change attitudes, a phenomenon deeply rooted in disparities in scientific knowledge and subjective social status. Their findings not only clarify the origins of climate skepticism but also provide critical insights for shaping effective environmental management strategies.
The study reveals that less-educated citizens are more skeptical of climate change and less trusting of climate science than their more-educated counterparts. Traditionally, this divide has been attributed to a "knowledge-deficit" model, which suggests that lower levels of scientific understanding lead to diminished concern about climate issues. However, the authors challenge this explanation by introducing the role of subjective social status, emphasizing that feelings of misrecognition and frustration toward higher social groups also significantly influence attitudes toward climate change.
Using survey data representative of the Dutch population, the study analyzed two primary outcomes: climate change skepticism and distrust in climate science. The results underscore several critical points:
Scientific Knowledge Matters: The research confirms that higher levels of scientific knowledge correlate with lower skepticism. However, it also highlights that knowledge alone cannot fully bridge the educational divide.
Subjective Social Status as a Driver: Less-educated citizens often perceive a lower social standing, leading to feelings of alienation and misrecognition. This perception intensifies opposition to the "elite" lifestyles of more-educated citizens, which often include strong support for climate science.
Combined Contributions: Scientific knowledge and subjective social status collectively explain a significant portion of the educational divide. For instance, 20.55% of the divide in climate skepticism and 17.17% of the divide in distrust of climate science are attributed to these factors.
The findings have profound implications for environmental campaigns and policies. Information campaigns designed to increase public understanding of climate science must be carefully tailored to avoid exacerbating feelings of misrecognition among less-educated citizens. Simply providing more information may backfire if perceived as condescending or dismissive of their lived experiences.
Moreover, the study suggests that bridging the divide requires acknowledging and addressing the social dimensions of climate change attitudes. By fostering inclusive dialogue and emphasizing shared goals, policymakers can mitigate the polarization between educational groups.
In light of these insights, the authors recommend a nuanced approach to environmental communication and policy-making:
Focus on Inclusive Messaging: Craft messages that resonate across educational and social divides, avoiding language that reinforces perceived status differences.
Leverage Local Perspectives: Engage community leaders and stakeholders from diverse educational backgrounds to co-create and disseminate climate initiatives.
Address Systemic Inequalities: Develop policies that not only educate but also empower less-educated citizens, integrating their perspectives into broader environmental strategies.
This study underscores the importance of considering both cognitive and social dimensions in addressing climate change. By integrating scientific knowledge with an understanding of subjective social status, environmental management can become more equitable and effective.
As climate change continues to pose unprecedented challenges, fostering trust and cooperation across all societal strata is essential. The work of Hoekstra et al. (2025) offers a roadmap for bridging the gaps that divide us, emphasizing that inclusive strategies are key to a sustainable future.
