AFTER THE BIOPSY: DISCHARGE ORDERS
Write post procedure orders (Figure 1) and a procedure note (Figure 2)
1. In-patients go back to their patient floor.
2. Out-patients who have procedures/biopsies without sedation can walk off the table and go home.
3. Out-patients who have biopsies with conscious sedation will be recovered for 1 hour in the RICA. Generally they are discharged without any issues, and you don’t need to check on them again. For post-procedure orders, write:
a. “Vitals q15 hours x 4. If able to eat, drink, and use the bathroom, discharge to home.” (this should be in the "IR Post General" Order Set
4. Patients who have general anesthesia need to be recovered in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). You don't usually need to place discharge/post procedure orders in this situation.
5. Post-Procedure instructions:
a. The small incision will be closed generally with:
1. Dermabond. No special instructions for this – they can go about everything normally. Just keep the bandage and area clean and dry (no submerging in water) for at least 48 hours
2. Steri-strips, covered by a Band-Aid. In that case the patient should keep it dry for 48 hours (you can give them a few large Tegaderms to cover the wound when they shower), after which the Steri-strips will fall off themselves within a week, and if not by then they can just pull it off themselves.
