About Zachary Davis
My whole life I wanted to work with animals in some way that benefitted conservation efforts. After reading through some of Dr. Sustaita’s research on this very site, I knew I had to be a part of the EcoMorph lab. Since then, I have worked on the salt marsh harvest mouse project and mainly focused my efforts on different aspects of their swimming performance; from gathering the data in our San Francisco Estuary field sites, to analyzing the high-speed videos in the lab. Zachary’s Undergraduate & Graduate Research
EcoMorph lab has provided me with the opportunity to study the salt marsh harvest mouse, specifically how their swimming performance differs from other rodents that live in the San Francisco Bay estuary. I use imaging software to measure various aspects of their body posture from high-speed videos of their swimming behavior. I also measure the shapes and angles of their feet as they paddle. These factors help us understand how suited this amazing mouse is to its unique environment. For my Master's thesis I plan to continue along this vein of research aimed at quantifying the swiming efficiency of salt marsh harvest mice and comparing it to that of other, ostensibly less aquatic, species.
