About Mason:
I am an undergraduate in the lab and I joined due to my fascination for animals and how they operate mechanically. I really wanted hands on experience with animals and I knew that I would get that opportunity by joining this lab. I have my hands on a lot of the projects going on in the lab. However, I mostly work with bite forces in both the Loggerhead Shrike and the salt marsh harvest mouse. My fellow lab mates like to call me a traitor since I don’t stick to one side. Mason's Undergraduate Research
I primarily worked with the Loggerhead Shrike bite performance project processing kinematic data from videos and integrating them with bite force data (Sustaita & Laurin 2024). I also spent lots of time creating 3D models from CT scans of shrike skulls for muscle segmentation and future biomechanical modeling of cranial kinesis. However, I also assisted with the salt marsh harvest mouse project in the field, focusing mostly on measuring their biting and grasping forces.
