March 28, 2018 - The Board of Regents Approved an Amendment to Part 30 of the State Education Regulations that:
Established a Computer Science certificate title that spans all grade levels,
Added Computer Science as a “special subject” tenure area,
Included provisions that will “grandfather” in those currently teaching computer science.
Individuals who already hold a teaching certificate may pursue an additional certificate in computer science by meeting specific computer science coursework.
"The content core shall be at least a total of 12 semester hours that provides a knowledge base for assisting students in understanding the following concepts: Algorithms and programming; Computing systems; Data and analysis; Impacts of computing; and Networks and the internet."
NY SED's website also states: "During the 12 semester hours of computer science coursework, candidates must also learn... how to code for accessibility. They must also learn... how computers can be used in educational settings to meet the needs of all learners..."
There is currently no certification exam for computer science, but one may be required in the future.
An individual may pursue a bachelor’s degree or master's degree in an approved educator preparation program leading to an initial certificate in computer science.
So far, there are 6 approved programs in New York state -- Siena College, Hunter College, Clarkson University, St Joseph's. NYU, & Manhattanville.
Individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree or higher and also have had three or more years of experience working in a position that requires the skills of a computer scientist would need to complete specific pedagogical coursework.
"18 semester hours of coursework that includes study in each of the following subjects: human development and learning..., teaching students with disabilities and special health-care needs..., teaching literacy skills..., curriculum, instruction, and assessment..., [and] foundations of education."
There is currently no certification exam for computer science, but one may be required in the future.

Computer Science teaching certification will follow the maintenance requirements of any other Professional Teaching certification.
Any teacher with Permanent Certification who adds Computer Science Certification will now need to meet the continuing education requirements of a Professional Certification.
There are many similarities between the requirements for a CTE Teaching Certification in Computer Information and a Classroom Teacher in Computer Science. Here are some qualification differences:
CTE: Associates degree or higher // Classroom: Bachelor's degree or higher
CTE: 9 semester hours of pedagogy coursework // Classroom: 18 semester hours of pedagogy coursework
CTE: 2 years of occupational work experience // Classroom: 3 years of occupational work experience.
CTE: No require standardized tests // Classroom: NYS CST and EAS tests.
