Major changes are happening to K-12 Computer Science education in New York. Now, more than ever, the voices of Programming, Coding, and Computer Science teachers need to be heard outside the classroom!
Traditionally, the person who teaches 'Programming' in a school has been a teacher of another discipline (Math/Science/Business/Technology) who petitioned for the class, likely developed her or his own curriculum, and self-promoted to recruit students each year. While this solo trailblazer approach may be common within the field of computer science, it creates a sense of isolation that isn't helpful in the field of education.
With the recent surge of interest in teaching Coding and Computer Science in schools, these 'solo' teachers are discovering they are not as isolated, what they've been doing is getting attention, and their number of colleagues is growing.
