1. What are Workplace Hazards?
- Workplace hazards are any source of potential damage, harm, or adverse health effects on workers.

Physical Hazards: refers to the factors or conditions within the environment that can harm your health.
Examples: Noise, radiation, extreme temperatures, electrical hazards, trip hazards (e.g., wet floors, loose cables).
Consequences: Hearing loss, burns, electric shock, falls, and injuries.

Chemical Hazards: refers to any forms of chemicals including medications, solutions, gases, vapors, aerosols, and particulate matter that are potentially toxic or irritating to the body system.
Examples: Chemical spills, exposure to toxic substances (e.g., acids, solvents, gases).
Consequences: Respiratory issues, skin irritation, poisoning, or long-term illnesses like cancer.

Biological Hazards: disease producing agents (pathogens) that can be transmitted to individuals through various routes of exposure (modes of transmission). Exposure to these hazards may result in acute or chronic health conditions.
Examples: Exposure to bacteria, viruses, fungi, or bodily fluids.
Consequences: Infections, diseases (e.g., COVID-19, hepatitis).

Ergonomic Hazards: Ergonomic hazards are physical factors in the environment that may cause musculoskeletal injuries.
Examples: Poor workstation setup, repetitive motions, heavy lifting.
Consequences: Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome).
Classification of Hazards:
Based on their nature: physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic (e.g., stress, workplace violence).
Potential Consequences of Exposure:
Short-term: Injuries, acute illnesses.
Long-term: Chronic diseases, disabilities, or fatalities.

What is PPE?
PPE refers to equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.

Head Protection: an item of personal protective equipment (PPE), which is generally designed to protect the scalp area and sometimes the jaw as well.
Example: Hard hats.
Purpose: Protects against falling objects, impacts, and electrical shocks.

Eye and Face Protection: safety glasses, goggles, and face shields designed to safeguard the eyes and face from workplace hazards such as flying particles, chemicals, or radiation
Example: Safety glasses, face shields.
Purpose: Prevents eye injuries from flying debris, chemicals, or radiation.

Hand Protection: It is designed to guard against a wide range of hazards, including:
cuts and abrasions;
extreme temperatures;
skin irritation and dermatitis; and
contact with toxic or corrosive substances.
Example: Gloves (chemical-resistant, cut-resistant, heat-resistant).
Purpose: Shields hands from chemicals, cuts, burns, and infections.

Respiratory Protection: used to protect the individual wearer against the inhalation of hazardous substances in the workplace air.
Example: Respirators, masks.
Purpose: Protects against inhalation of harmful dust, fumes, or gases.

Body Protection: is designed to protect workers from serious workplace injuries or illnesses resulting from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.
Example: Coveralls, aprons.
Purpose: Protects against chemical spills, extreme temperatures, and biological hazards.

Proper Use of PPE:
Ensure PPE fits properly and is worn consistently during hazardous tasks.
Follow manufacturer instructions for maintenance and replacement.
Selecting Appropriate PPE:
Assess the specific hazards of the task.
Choose PPE that meets safety standards (e.g., OSHA, WHO guidelines).
