The K-5 Foundations Domain consists of five Big Ideas: Phonological Awareness, Concepts of Print, Phonics, Fluency, and Handwriting. Each big idea consists of standards and expectations. Expectations found within each standard focus closely on the skills and concepts students need to learn as they develop reading skills. The standards and expectations build on each other as the grade levels advance. At the bottom of the page, one can access the K-5 Foundational standards by grade band via the link to Inspire. Additionally, other GaDOE resources used within this session are linked through Inspire. During this presentation, participants will engage in several activities to develop a thorough understanding of how these reading expectations are designed.
At the bottom of the page, examples of chart work completed by participants in the professional learning sessions are included. These examples provide professional learning trainers a visual of the product created after the participants have studied the "depth" and the "breadth" of one of the expectations in the Foundations Domain. The intent behind this activity reflects the participants practice with how to read the expectations for skills and concepts found within both their grade level (depth) as well as alignment across grade bands (breadth).
