We did a project about emerging technology which would be up and coming within the next 5 years or so
I chose GLP-1's and their possible use for neurodegenerative diseases in the future
I learned that the first clinical trials of the drug was tested in a group of Alzheimers patients over the period of several years, but enough of the drug never effectively crossed the blood brain barrier in order to produce desired results
I learned that technology is always adapting and changing. I learned that Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease that some researchers think could be treated or even cured by using the GLP-1 drugs to reduce inflammation in the body and specifically the brian. Unfortunately, within a study of patients who already have Alzheimer's, the study did not show significant improvement to any of the patient's cognitive decline over the course of a few years. Scientists still think there could be a development in this technology if it is possible to make the drug cross the blood brain barrier more effectively. They will be working on studying this now.
