This is an example of a photograph that I took with my iPhone outside of my car as I was leaving for school. This tree just caught my eye and I felt like I had to take a picture of it. It is in "jpeg." format. I own it and have my own creative commons copyright for it below.
This is an example of an animation in the "gif." format. I found this Snoopy animation when I was looking for a fall-themed gif. on Google and I felt like I just had to use it for this assignment. I love Charlie Brown and Snoopy and I thought it was fitting given that my picture I took on my phone was also a fall picture.
This is an example of a YouTube video that I found when I searched for Autumn leaves falling from a tree. I think it perfectly encapsulates the vision I had in my mind for a video depicting leaves falling in the fall so I was really happy when I found it.
This is an example of an audio file in the "mp3." format. I found this audio while I was looking for a sound to go along with the autumn theme of this webpage for unit 3. I used freesound.org and came across this sound of forest ambience and loved it immediately. Once I saved it, I used Audacity to shorten the file from 10 minutes to a 15 second snippet and change it to an mp3. file from a wav. file for my website.
I learned a lot this unit about the key differences in file types and their different purposes. I learned the differences between saving and exporting and how to use each to my advantage. I also just never really stopped and gave thought to how many different media types I interact with every day. I never realized that I interact with every type of media on this webpage multiple times a day while on my phone, computer, and social media.
After taking the “AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?” quiz, I realized how much I use social media and how invasive it really is in my life. The results are on the left and stated,
"You’re fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it’s good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That’s about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I'm glad I answered the questions honestly because I needed that little reality check. I do go on social media and sit on my phone too much when I need to be doing homework or could be giving myself some time to just unwind or sleep. Although it's an average usage, I would like it to be a lot less. You can't be successful if you're doing the same things as everyone else.
Social media has a huge grip on society and it affects virtually everyone and everything and we don't even realize it because of how integrated it is into our lives. Everyone's opinions, interests, and perceptions are all heavily influenced by social media and due to that fact, it can be a very toxic environment. I think everyone should try to use their phones less and "live a little," because everyone deserves to accomplish their goals and do great things. Social media takes up too much of our precious time everyday and we need to do something about it.
I learned a lot about how much I actually use social media in my daily life and how detrimental it can be to me achieving my goals. It takes up so much time in my life and the daily lives of so many and we all don't realize what we could've done with that extra time. Trying to limit screen time and learning how to balance it in our lives is key to being successful in modern society.
